Step Three
Steve Deutsch

I’m ready.

It said, “You have a quiet and unobstructive nature.”

That’s about to change. I’m not going to be quiet and I have no idea how to react to the word unobstructive. I’m going to change the meaning of quiet and unobstructive right now.

The power is still on. It has been on for a while now. I’m still looking straight into the lens of this simple video camera. The little red “record” button is still illuminated screaming at me to begin. It blinks every three seconds reminding me of it’s “on” status. I’ve been wasting time by counting the blinks.

Fifty-seven blinks. Now, it’s fifty-eight.

I positioned the camera on its tripod in the front end of my room. I’m sitting on a chair presently positioned in front of the black tripod. If you would remove my chair, there would be four indentations in the carpet from the metal legs. The indentations would not fix themselves for probably days for I have been sitting here that long. Little bits of crumbs from the cookie have found its way around the legs of my chair. The long, white piece of paper remains on the ground where I dropped it. I have been staring straight into the camera lens. The camera is looking back at me and its shouting, “Action.”

It yells, “Begin. Get it over with.”

I want to do this. I feel as if it is one of the last things I could do. Sure, my heart only goes so far, but this could go on forever.

I have no idea how to begin. I only know how I want to end this.

What seems to be about seventy blinks, I clench my fists, shut my eyes and I open my mouth to just let the words happen.

It was supposed to happen that way.

“I have no idea how to begin this thing. I only know how I want to end it,” I said looking into the camera. “I’m just doing this. I feel as if it’s my only choice.”

People always ask for an explanation. People always read to the end of their mystery novels. They want their fancy-ass ending. They want the characters to live happily-ever-fucking-after. People want to end their stories with a smile. It makes them think that they can end their life with a smile of their own.

“Look at me. Look at this face. I’m not smiling. I’ve been staring into this camera for who knows how long and I know I have to do this. I know I have to finish this. I want to finish this.”

Everybody has to do at least something out of life. I’ll agree with that. Nobody wants to be known as a lazy-ass bastard who did nothing. I want to accomplish some sort of feat. Therefore, I set up the camera in the front end of my room.

“I know that this is my reason for living. I know that once I finish this tape, once I tell my story, there will be no reason for anything.”

I won’t die with a smile. I won’t read to the end of the mystery novel. I won’t have my happily-ever-fucking-after ending. I’ll just die knowing that I have accomplished everything my life has to offer. I’ll just have this tape to pass on to every other loser out there. It’s my gift to the world. My reason for living is to spread this gift.

It was supposed to happen that way.

I have this planned out so perfectly. First, I come up here and set up my camera. Since that is completed, my next task is to record my story.

“I’m going to tell you my story.”

After my debut is filmed, I’ll pass to stage three. Stage three of my plan will be the easiest thing to complete.

I’m ready.

“This is my reason for living. Once it’s completed, I’m going to slit my wrists.”
