One More Chance
One More Chance Characters: Alexandria- a beautiful young girl who seeks romance and love Charlie- a big rough muscular man James- Alexandria’s real boyfriend Waiter- Waits tables at the restaurant Office Lady- lady who works at Alexandria’s office Scene 1: Center there is a restaurant outside on a porch. On the table there is a white tablecloth, and a vase full of flowers. Upstage center there is a beautiful sunset in the background. Alexandria and Charlie walk in from downstage right. They look nervous and unsettled. They can smell the hot peppers, as the food is cooking. Alexandria is wearing a long black dress, and high heels. Her long blonde hair is styled up. Charlie is wearing an old pair of jeans, and a dirty shirt. Alexandria: Ooh, I want this table here. Charlie: No, No, any table will be fine. Waiter: Right this way. (Exits upstage right) Alexandria: This place is so beautiful and romantic. Charlie: It’s the same as any other restaurant. (His face turns angry, and he turns his head to look away.) Alexandria: So have you ever been on a blind date before? Charlie: No actually this is my first one. Alexandria: Well I don’t like blind dates very much. Charlie: Why not? Alexandria: Well you see I have a boyfriend. But we haven’t been getting along so well lately. That’s the only reason I agreed to this date. Alexandria sighs and looks the other way. They examine their menus as they sip their wine. Uncomfortably. Waiter walks in from upstage right. Waiter: May I take your order? Charlie: Yes, I’ll have the filet mignon, and she’ll have the lobster. Alexandria: Excuse me, I can order what I want! Charlie: Well maybe if you fixed yourself up a little, you would be worthwhile to go out with! The waiter looks confused and walks off upstage left. Alexandria stands up and throws down her napkin. Alexandria: I’m out of here! Charlie: No! Wait! Alexandria: I can’t believe you said this to me. How can you do that? You insulted me! Charlie: Wait! Wait! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to insult you. Alexandria: Well guess what? You did. Alexandria exits the restaurant downstage right. Scene 2: Center is a couch at Alexandria’s apartment. She sits on the couch, reading a book. To her left there is a wooden stand, with a telephone sitting on top. She is dressed comfortably in a sweatshirt and sweatpants. Suddenly the phone rings. Alexandria picks it up. Alexandria: Hello? Charlie: Yes hi, please don’t hang up! This is Charlie. We went on a date last week. Alexandria rolls her eyes. Alexandria: Yeah, what do you want? Charlie: I just really wanted to tell you how sorry I am, I never wanted to hurt you. Alexandria: Why does it matter? The date is over! Just go on with your life. Charlie: I just want another chance. Alexandria: Why? It was clearly shown by your attitude that you didn’t enjoy being with me! Charlie: Well, I was just having a bad day, okay? Alexandria: Well, I don’t believe you. Charlie: Then let me prove it to you! Alexandria: Why? Charlie: Because it just got me upset that you had a boyfriend and the only reason you went on a date with me is because you weren’t getting along. Alexandria: I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to say it that way. Charlie: So do you still want to go out? Alexandria: Okay, fine. One more date, that’s it. Charlie: Great, thanks. I’ll pick you up Friday night. Scene 3: Center there is a movie theatre, with a big screen and several chairs. Charlie and Alexandria enter the theatre, and take a seat. Alexandria is wearing a nice baby blue shirt, with a short skirt. Charlie is wearing a nice pair of khakis and a polo shirt. Charlie: I’m so happy that you gave me another chance. (As he puts his arm around her.) Alexandria: Well don’t mess up now. (As she reaches behind her, and moves his arm off of her.) They continue to watch the movie. Halfway through Charlie goes in for another move. Alexandria slaps him across the face. She gets up off of her chair, and leaves the Theatre. Charlie: Alexandria! Wait! Alexandria: Leave me alone. Charlie: I didn’t mean to offend you! Alexandria: Well you did, for the second time! So leave me alone forever! Don’t call me ever again! Scene 4: On the apron, there is a mailbox at Alexandria’ house. Alexandia is wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Alexandria opens up the mailbox and she takes out a letter. It is from Charlie. She opens it up, and then begins to read aloud. Alexandria: Dear Alexandria, you are the love of my life, I am so sorry! She crumples up the note, and she throws it on the ground. She exits the stage downstage right. She re-enters through Upstage right. Scene 5: Center there is a desk in an office. On the desk there are many papers, and a telephone sitting on her desk. Alexandria is wearing a business suit. An office lady walks in from downstage left. Office Lady: Miss Alexandria, you have a special delivery. Alexandria: Oh great, now what? Office Lady: It looks like flowers. (She hands the bouquet of flowers to Alexandria.) Alexandria opens the flowers, and reads the card aloud. Alexandria: Dear Alexandria, I will do anything. Please forgive me. Alexandria picks up the flowers and the card, and throws them in the trash. The office lady exits upstage left. Alexandria continues working at her desk. When suddenly the phone rings. She picks up the phone. Alexandria: Hello? This is Alexandria. Charlie: Please Alexandria! I really need to talk to you. Alexandria: No Charlie, it is over and done with. Now just leave me alone! Charlie: No! I didn’t mean to hurt you. Alexandria: Look Charlie, I have a boyfriend. We are made up now and I don’t think it would be right for me to be still seeing you. Charlie: But please give me another chance. You are the most beautiful girl and I would do anything for another date. Alexandria: Promice me that you’ll leave me alone after one more date okay? Charlie: Okay, I Promise. Scene 6: Alexandria and James sit at a resterant at a stable center stage. Alexandria is wearing a flower dress, and James is dressed in a dark suit. James’s hair is professionally slicked back with hair gel. Alexandria’s hair Waves in the wind. James: I’m so glad that we are made up. Alexandria: Me too. James: I wanted to tell you something Alexandria. Alexandria looks down at the floor uncomfortably. Alexandria: What is it James? James: Well while we were fighting I was seeing another girl. But it’s okay now we are made up. It’s not a big deal. Alexandria: Well as a matter of a fact I was seeing someone else too. James: What? Alexandria: So we’re even. James: I can’t believe you did that! Alexandria: So did you! James: Yeah but that’s different. Alexandria: Forget it, I have someone who actually cares about me. Alexandria throws down her napkin and pushes back out of her chair. She stomps off stage left. Scene 7: Alexandria enters from right, Charlie enters from left. In the middle, there is a porch. On the table there is a white tablecloth, and a vase full of flowers. Upstage center there is a beautiful sunset in the background. Alexandria and Charlie walk in from downstage right. They can smell the hot peppers, as the food is cooking. Alexandria is wearing a white top, with black dress pants. Charlie is wearing a navy sweater, and a nice pair of jeans. Charlie: Here we are again. Alexandria: Yeah, I can’t believe I am here with you again. Charlie: Well, I am very sorry. People make mistakes you know. Alexandria: Yes, I know. Waiter: May I take you to your seats? Oh wait a minute, you are those two who were here the other day. The two that were fighting over who ordered, and over the most stupid things. Alexandria: Yes that was us. Charlie: We are very sorry, sir. They walk to the table, and sit down. Waiter: May I take your order? Charlie: Yes, I will have the spaghetti dinner. This lovely lady will order her own. Alexandria: Thank you. I will have the spaghetti also. They hand their menus to the waiter, and the waiter walks off and exits upstage right. Alexandria and Charlie turn to each other. Charlie: I’m very happy you are here with me. Alexandria: Actually I’m happy too. I’m having a good time. Charlie: Really? Well I am glad. Alexandria: Yes, at first I thought of you as some rough unthoughtful guy. Now I am starting to see the real you. Charlie: I’m sorry I acted so terrible to you before. I wasn’t too into the blind dating. And I got very upset when I found out you had a boyfriend. Alexandria: It’s okay. I forgive you, and I’m sorry for making you ffeel bad. James was a real jerk, but I remembered how you told me how beautiful I was. James would have never said that. They reach out and hold each other’s hands. The curtain closes.
