Annabelle the Ant
In a town near a house, on a curb by a gutter lived a wild eyed Ant with her dreams and her mother With a mind for adventure she knew all too well, but discouraged by her mother goes the story of Annabelle. "Annabelle, Annabelle!" her mother would call. "Stay away from the edge it's too high you might fall." But the curious little ant liked to go there and dream and imagine what's out there and yet to be seen. "Someday I will travel to distant lands and beyond. I'll show the world, I'll show my mom. She says I'm too little, that I'm not strong enough to go and explore but I'll show her I'm tough." She would prepare in the day and dream about it at night. Of a time when she could spread her wings and take flight. "Annabelle you're silly filling your head. With nonsense and fantasy please hear what I've said." Annabelle began to think maybe momma is right. "Maybe I should listen more, close my mouth and not fight." So the next day she went to the edge one last time. Singing songs of her mother with praise and with rhyme. But as she got to the edge she saw something strange. The bottom of the gutter, the color had changed. What was once gray was now something new. It was flowing and clear, majestic and blue. Frozen in amazement was the little ant daughter. She had never seen this , she had never seen water. "Wow!" she exclaimed. "I have never seen this." A closer look she desired as she became curious. So she climbed down the wall and jumped onto a leaf. But the leaf was weak and broke so this ride was brief. She fell into the water and struggled around. Till a twig floated by that was sturdy and brown. She grabbed onto it for safety giving into her pride. Held onto the twig and went along for the ride. "yippee!" she shouted as the ride became fun. A new experience for her, something she's never done. But like everything in life the ride came to an end. So she got off the twig and said goodbye to her friend. "Where am I?" she said. "Am I far away?" "From mom, and my home, and the curb where I play?" This filled her mind and soon a new thought. "Who cares about that an adventure I've got. I can do what I want, I can be on my own. I can prove to everyone I can make it alone." So she climbed back up the curb and inside a new crack. And was happy and joyful, never wanted to go back. "This is great, a new place for me to explore. There's a whole world out there I want to see more." Meanwhile back at home momma grew worried. "She should have been back!" So she left and she hurried. To the spot near the edge where she said she would go. Did momma find her little girl the answer was no. "Oh where has she gone, what have I done. It is my fault she has left and is out on the run." Momma began to cry but soon the tears would dry up. As she peered over the edge and saw a Styrofoam cup. "if she's out there I'll find her." She said to the world. Yoru momma is coming my sweet little girl." So she climbed on the cup and set sail all alone. And like little Annabelle had a ride of her own. At this time for Annabelle new feelings sank in. A frown on her face hid her innocent grin. She began to get scared as the sky soon got black. "I miss momma, I want to go back." She began to feel scared, as she called mom in her cries. The water she had seen now came out of her eyes. "I'm sorry mom that I doubted you. I realized all you told me, I realize it was true. Momma are you out there I'm calling your name." And like a vision in the night momma soon came. "My angel my baby I've missed you so much." Annabelle soon stopped crying as she felt momma's touch. The two reunited and a feeling grew in their hearts. As they both knew never again would they be apart. "Now silly girl it is time to go home. But I'm proud of you darling my dear you have grown. And like that they were off, and soon they were back. There's no place like home even if it's a crack. And now it is time that we bid a farewell. To the wild-eyed little Ant with the name Annabelle.

"This poem has an appeal to a kindergarten group. I wish that I could distribute this book to all the parents of kinder year kids in my town.
