The Treasure

Levi liked to dig in the dirt in his front yard.
He spent hours outside almost every day.

One day he was digging, a little deeper than usual, and he hit something hard.
He moved some dirt out of the way to see what it was. It was a metalbox with a picture on it. He started to dig around it to see more when his mother called.
"Levi, its time to come in, sweetheart. It's getting late."
"Look mommy. I found something!" Levi said excitedly.
"It will still be there in the morning. Come inside please."

That night Levi feel asleep thinking about that box. He wondered what he would find in it when he dug it out all the way.
He dreamed of all sorts of treasures. In his dream the box was filled with candy, lollipops and bubblegum. He also dreamt of yo-yos and brightly colored bouncy balls, race cars and jump ropes.

The next morning he couldn't wait to get back outside to uncover his treasure. He quickly finished off his breakfast and ran out the door.

Levi dug and dug and finally pulled out the small metal box.
He ran into the house and showed it to his mom.
She wiped it off and opened it. Inside was a picture of two boys, a toy car all scratched up and dirty and a toy soldier with one arm missing.
"Oh it's just some old junk.," Levi said and he ran back outside to play.

Later that night mom called Levi into the house.
"I showed this to your dad and he has something to tell you."
"You found something very special," dad explained. "This metal box used to be my school lunch box. This picture is of me and my best friend , Luke, when we were kids. This was his favorite toy car, he never went anywhere without it. The soldier was mine."
"How come it only has one arm?" Levi asked.
"Well, you see, when we were kids, Luke had an accident and broke his arm. He was very sad. To make him feel better I took the arm off my soldier. We played with these two toys every day.
"One day Luke told me he had to move away but he wanted me to have his car to keep playing with to remember him.
"I missed Luke too much. I didn't like playing with these toys without him so I burried them so I wouldn't miss him so much. I had forgotten all about this stuff until today.
"Would you like to keep these, Son?"
Levi shrugged his shoulders. He didn't really want them.
"Its okay, I understand." said his dad.

The next day while digging in the yard, Levi looked up and saw a boy walking up the street. The boy looked sad. Levi went to ask him if he was okay and noticed a cast on his arm.
"Stay here," he said. "I'll be right back."
He ran into his house and came back with two toys. "Do you want to play with me? You can play with this car and I'll play with the soldier. He only has one arm, but he still looks happy."
The boy smiled. "Sure, I am Joey. We just moved here."
"I am Levi. My mom's name is Crystal and my dad's name is John."
Luke replied, "My mom's name is Sarah and my dad's name is Luke."

That night Levi told his dad about the new friend he met earlier that day. His dad quickly picked up the phone and talked to Joey's dad for hours.

Afterwards, Levi's dad told him that he had dug up one of the greatest treasures in the world.
The treasure of friendship.

"Wonderfull story! Formatting could be alittle tighter but a fine piece of work here!" -- Monte.
"The story's great!CarineC has done a great job.Three cheers for her and The Treasure! It is one of best imaginative pieces I have ever read." -- Bidisha, India.
"Excellent topic! Well done in under a thousand words!" -- c pIFER, JAX, FL, USA.
"You have a potentially very powerful story. The ending needs more impact - it needs to be more of a surpise about Luke being the new boy's father. May I suggest a book by William Zinsser titled "On Writing Well". Zinsser can help you create that unexpected revelation that will surprise and delight your readers." -- Alan Jeans, Seeley Lake, MT, USA.
