A Reality Check For America

Okay, let’s drop all the b.s. rhetoric about “shared sacrifice” and be honest about what it is Charles Rangel has asked for.
When an individual human being is forced, against their will, to serve another person or entity, the proper word for this atrocity is slavery. The fact that Charles Rangel believes he even has a right to make such a request, which neither he nor anyone else in this world does, demonstrates he is a true believer in the idea of people as property.
Rangel’s time spent in the higher levels of America’s political establishment has apparently given him a case of historical amnesia. While the power he enjoys would never have been possible had it not been for the abolitionists, he now spits in the abolitionists’ faces and condemns everything they stood for.
The abolitionists, the people who began the first political movement to end slavery, were not motivated by racial sympathies, they were motivated by a belief. The belief which motivated them was a consensus that forced servitude was barbaric, cruel, and a violation of a human being’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They were motivated by a belief that no person has the right to own another person.
Rangel and his supporters, on the other hand, believe the opposite. They feel people are the property of the government and that life exists only so that the government can one day exploit them. In this case, Rangel wants to wrongfully enslave people of a particular age group, because in his mind their age makes them less worthy of human rights. In the past, people were enslaved on the basis of race, because the slave drivers felt their skin color made them less worthy of human rights. There is no difference between Charles Rangel’s age-based bigotry and the race-based bigotry of early plantation owners.
Whether Rangel believes it or not, children do not belong to their parents, and they do not belong to the state. Children belong to themselves. No person on this earth has a right to force another person to choose between risking death or risking imprisonment. No person who would attempt to force servitude upon another person is worthy of serving.
If faced with a choice like that, it is better to fall divided from those who would violate a person’s individual sanctity than to stand united with them. Patriotism is when we have the courage to resist politicians who would misuse federal power as a tool to enslave or harm people.
The reason wars and conflict occur is because people have not yet learned to express dissent peacefully. An anti-war movement grounded in the draft is not a peace movement at all, it is simply a pro-war movement with a different agenda.
The cycle of pain is the very cycle which must come undone, if peace is ever to be achieved anywhere. Charles Rangel is taking an approach which only feeds the cycle of harm, probably because the conflict it generates makes it easier for people like him to exploit tragedy for personal gain and use that ongoing conflict to retain their power.
Even if Rangel truly believed that “spreading the burden” of death and misery across the nation was a noble and just thing to do in a time of war, one needs only look at the last person who tried to do the same. Timothy McVeigh used the EXACT same line of reasoning, verbatim, to justify his bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City. McViegh was angry that his friends on the Branch Davidian compound had been killed in a standoff in Waco, Texas. He bombed an office building full of innocent people because he felt the public had not been sympathetic enough to those who had died. He wanted to “make it affect them” by forcing them to “share the pain”.
Charles Rangel’s argument is no different from Timothy McViegh’s, or even Osama Bin Laden’s for that matter. They days when people hurt other people in an attempt to intimidate society or force people to acknowledge an issue must be brought to an end. The kind of views espoused by the Bin Ladens, the Rangels, and the McVieghs of the world are definitely evil, and they are harmful, and these concepts must be defeated if society is to survive another century. As long as people continue hurting others to prove points, civilization will continue to decline and life will not be safe or pleasant for anyone.
When people resort to acts of violence, oppression, enslavement, or criminal wrongdoing, they are perpetuating the cycle which creates the problems they are struggling against. True peace lovers, people of pure heart and soul, people who really stand for goodness- must now rise to take on the biggest challenge of their lives. The challenge we face is that of spreading peace through expression- teaching people how to communicate their grievances without inflicting harm upon others. Until people can learn to respect each other’s right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness; and resolve their differences without harming one another, this world will continue to deteriorate into perpetual war, horror, misery, and suffering. If that continues, the human race will inevitably bring about its own demise.
