“Stick this landing, point your toes, do fifty pushups.” These are the words that have been a part of my life ever since I was five. Gymnastics is a sport that has influenced me in many ways. I have had many injuries as wells as fond memories. I’ve had many coaches and teammates that have made a great impact on my life. The person I am today reflects the eleven years of my gymnastics career.
It all started at “Tony’s Gym”. I was five years old, taking classes with my sister. Honestly, she was the one that was more serious about it at that point. We learnedskills with no difficulty, and moved to a new gym. This gigantic place was “Will-Moor”. It had triple the amount of equipment than my other gym as wells as people. Eventually we got split up into different classes, and that was the point I knew I would stay with the sport for a while.
My sister eventually quit gymnastics, and I moved up to a new level. At this level I learned many new things and was then pushed to try out for the Optional League Team. I made it, and that moment was a big change for me. There were a lot more girls on the team and I had to compete.
My first competition was very nerve wrecking. I can still remember my hands sweating like a faucet. But I made it through it. I continued on that team for a while; many new coaches walking in and out. Bridget and Jamie had the biggest impact on me during my time at Will-Moor. Jamie was my first coach at that gym and he still coached me while I was on the team. Bridget was my first coach on the team and coached me through my very last day.
Then the madness came. The gym was a wreck. A lot of people were quitting and the owners were not treating us with respect. They were degrading our team, and we felt uncomfortable. Bridget then fled to another gym and we all followed. I was 15 years old, nearing the end of my gymnastics career, but I had to switch to a new team.
We all adjusted pretty well to the gym, and we competed like nothing ever happened. The twelve of us that came to this new gym, helped boost the name of the gym. We won many meets and brought the team scores up fairly high. We were all so happy, but something awful occurred. Jamie died. It was a shock and it happened so fast. He was a great coach and will always be missed.
Eventually the time came, and I was tired of competing. My back and knees were in a lot of pain and I was burnt out. At that point I was going home every night icing my knees and sleeping with a heating pad. All the girls tried to convince me to stay but I could not do it any longer. On my last they gave me a book with letters and pictures from coaches and teammates during my eleven years of gymnastics, I will treasure it forever. I remember walking out the door and knowing I would never compete again. It was a sad day but the friends I made in gymnastics will always remain close to me.
Gymnastics has made me the person I am today. It brought me much discipline as well as leadership skills. My coaches as well as teammates had much impact on me and I will never forget them. at this point in my life I know I did not make a mistake in my life when I decided to stick with gymnastics as my sister moved on to other sports.

"This reads to me like a diray piece, there are some great diarists around today, I publish my own diary on the net and it's a great way of writing and keeping up the writing momentum. I enjoyed this piece because it was written almost dispassionately and yet all the 'growing-up' through the sport came across. Nice work. " -- Sooz, Dalton-in-furness, England, Cumbria.
