What Is Writing?
Jim Taylor
It's already 10PM and I'm sitting in a cafe alone writing.The light is dim and I have to strain my eyes.
The guy behind the counter is watching me languidly.His jaws are constanly moving as if he's going to spit out,but he doesn't.
Living in New York is much like writing in a complete darkness,scribbling without even seeing the pad.It gives you a funny feeling of disorientation,you are lost in the crowd,you are one with it and you don't know wheather it's you or them who is walking down the street,drinking coffee and reading papers.
The desire to write always takes you by surprise,it's not like breathing as someone said,it's more like yawning-not so essential,but you can't help it sometimes.
Everyone who has ever written something knows what inspiration is like.I think it's a delusion that the thing which makes you write is love or hate or your ideas.All the writers just experience inspiration,which overflows them and they have an urge to describe the feeling to others.Shakespear's inspiration is just the same as yours,only you may fail to find the right words.The main point of literature is explaining what inspiration is.Different styles and genres are just different approaches to solving this task.
And writing is a strange thing.You have nothing to say,but want to be heard desperately.
Writing your first thing isn't as easy as it seems.You can't come up to a piano and play it,if you have never tried it before.That's just the way with writing.
And writing your second story is even harder,because at first you had no one to dissapoint,but yourself and your second piece must live up to expectations of both those who liked your first one and those who didn't.

Amyone can jot down their thoughts on paper in prose or poetry form. This does not make them a writer. Many are wasting their time and the time of others who would read these utterings. A passion for writing should be unselfish in the sense that you want to share your thoughts with others by enlightening or entertaining them and allowing them to feel your emotion and artistry. If you write only to relieve your pain or despair you are being selfish and the writing serves only your self-interest. Having a passion to write, as you call it, is not enough." -- Richard.
