Symbolism Over Substance – The Liberal Manifesto
Richard Koss

It’s been awhile since I last posted anything on this site. I’ve had other priorities keeping me busy, like staying alive. I’ve also noticed that this site has been taken over by another generation. I’m not complaining about that because it’s quite a natural evolution and many of you young writers are very good. It’s just that I’m not interested in gothic imitations which focus on vampires, the occult, and sci-fi fantasy.

Most of you probably consider me an old fart who’s living in the past, a past dominated by racists, bigots, homophobes, and womanizers. Those of you who have read some of my stories and essays might agree that I fit in somewhere among these undesirables. But that’s really not me.

I grew up in a time when we played baseball and football without uniforms and shoulder pads. We traded comic books and the only movies on TV were at least ten years old. We learned to smoke because most of our parents smoked cigarettes then. That was before anybody ever heard of the Surgeon General. The nuns kept us busy with homework and we played baseball or football almost every day so we never had much time to think about sex. There were no drug pushers in our neighborhoods and crime was something that happened far away.

I had 450 kids in my high school graduating class which included one black girl. My first real exposure to blacks came when I joined the army right after high school. I was lucky to be in the army just after Korea and before Viet Nam, so I escaped combat duty. After my hitch in the army, I worked days and went to night school at John Carroll University. Eventually I saved enough money to attend school full time and received my degree from Kent State University.

I was fairly liberal then, but not to the extent many of you are today. We didn’t have professors who pushed their liberal ideology on us. We went to college to learn and prepare for a career in the outside world. Somewhere since those days, the world changed a lot. We weren’t saints by any stretch of the imagination but there was never any doubt in our mind about right and wrong and good or bad. Although most of us were sinners, we still had a sense of what morality was.

Today, the public high school I graduated from is about 65% black. There are almost as many security guards on the payroll as there are teachers. The school is plagued with truancy, violence, drug abuse and teen pregnancies, while the school’s state academic standing has fallen off the map.

This is a pretty typical scenario in many of the public schools throughout the country. Who’s to blame? There’s a lot of blame to go around. Some blame it on the breakdown of the family unit, too many divorces, kids born out of wedlock, single mothers, etc. Some blame it on the politicians. Others say it’s the loss of moral values, the anti-religion climate of the country. I blame most of this decay on liberalism.

Liberalism is an ideology that embraces a lot of good ideals such as compassion, acceptance, the recognition of human and individual rights, while fighting vigorously against racism, bigotry, and intolerance. Unfortunately, the liberal of yesterday is not the liberal of today. Modern day liberalism has twisted and stretched the concept of individual rights to the extent that even the most outrageous, extreme, amoral behavior is to be not only tolerated but accepted and revered. The liberals of today refuse to recognize that the basis for all behavior comes from a society’s mores, which are derived from its religious foundation. In the United States this foundation is our Judeo-Christian heritage.

I know you atheists and agnostics are probably fuming by now. I’m not a right-wing Christian nor am I a particularly religious person but the fact is, the vast majority of people born and raised in this country are weaned on this Judeo-Christian heritage whether you like it or not. Which brings us to the basic cancer of liberalism. Liberalism embraces the minority under the guise of “protecting the minority” from the majority. Unfortunately, we have gone so far, with the help of liberal Supreme Court Justices, that it has become fashionable to be part of a minority – any minority. This equates to the premise that a minority of anything is good, a majority of anything is bad. “Any” minority includes any behavior, no matter how repulsive to or deviant from the majority. By embracing this “minority and diversity is best” approach, we are moving our society to become the lowest common denominator in terms of behavior and lifestyle.

Without a moral fiber, such as a religious basis to remind us of why we should be compassionate, loving, tolerant, and grateful for our freedom, we will eventually lose the ability to distinguish good from evil. When this happens, we lose respect for our laws and institutions and become a society where the only sin is to judge others.

Thus, liberalism, without a moral foundation has become an ideology of symbolism without substance. Let’s look at what liberalism has given us. Political correctness has become a way of life. We have become so careful of the words we use to describe people. Most of these politically correct terms are designed to force us to be more kind and considerate of others, especially those less fortunate who are burdened with mental and physical afflictions. You hear them everyday, mentally challenged not retarded, physically challenged, not crippled, obese or heavy, but never fat. How about socially and economically challenged, no more criminals or felons or vagrants, or bums or poor people. We use these words, we’re told, to give these less fortunate people self-esteem, dignity, and hopefully guide them to a better life. I’ve been around for awhile and I’ve yet to see anybody change their life because of words or labels. The only people really benefiting from politically correct language are the liberals who invent these words because it makes them feel empowered to change the way everyone else talks and thinks. And that’s what it’s all about with liberals – power.

Liberal symbolism manifests itself primarily in rhetoric and is very seldom useful when it comes to taking action. Action usually follows a substantive plan based on logic and reason and needs people to implement it. Liberals are too lazy to implement anything. They talk and talk and tell you how you should be living to stay healthier; they preach doom and gloom about global warming and can’t wait to get their faces on television in the wake of some natural disaster like a hurricane or earthquake and blame it on the president or people polluting the earth or some other crap because they can’t accept the fact that maybe God had something to do with it.

Liberals continuously talk the talk but they have no idea how to even begin the walk. You’ve heard the expression, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.” I guess if you don’t believe in God or heaven or hell, you can get by with words and good intentions. Just ask any liberal, they’ll tell you all about it.
