About my encounter with a young cashier at KFC. I tried to be a positive influence, but I still kind of wonder if I wasn't intruding on what soda she drank. [577 words]

Confessions Of A Caffeine Junkie Nancy Rider
Coming home from work in Orlando, my mental mind’s goal was to pick up some Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner. I had wanted this luscious meat since last weekend when we baked chicken and had sandwiches. There is nothing wrong with baked chicken, but it is not the crunchy juicy mouth watering taste that only Kentucky Fried Chicken can provide. When I got there in the middle afternoon there wasn’t much of a crowd so I was able to park very easily close to the building. I walked in with no one yelling “Welcome to KFC” like they greet you in some other eating establishments. There wasn’t much of a line just one other couple ahead of me that finished in no time at all. The staff was all young and mostly thin with a few exceptions. I was greeted by a girl who looked like a walking rail. She took my order and another girl who also looked like a walking rail started piecing my order together. Ten pieces chicken, four biscuits, mashed potatoes (instant) and gravy with baked beans and for thirteen dollars and something cents. The girl getting my order together was complaining of having a headache all day. I chimed in and suggested that she drink some Pepsi, since all they serve is Pepsi products. She confessed in a non-thinking manner that she had been drinking Mountain Dew all day. The answer just popped in to my head to say to her “You know Mountain Dew raises your blood pressure”. This statement was treated like a curse or an infectious disease that everyone avoided. The look I got from her and the statement of “I should only drink water” was one of loosing your childhood innocence. I suggested that she try coke products, because they were lower in caffeine. I confessed to her that I too was a caffeine junkie which didn’t have much influence on what she must have been thinking. I didn’t go into stories about how Mountain Dew raised my blood pressure or how it raised a fellow State of Florida worker’s blood pressure that when he went to the doctor’s office they had to give him a pill under his tongue just to lower it before he left the office. I would drink can after can and he would drink two liter after two liter of that great citrus tasting drink that would give you the ultimate feel good buzz. Anyways, I left KFC with my artery clogging chicken and mixed feelings of how I ruined her fragile ego. The youth of today are so carefree about what they do and what they eat it seems terrible to disturb that balance, but I know that eventually those young creatures will turn into me. I don’t look like Farrah Fawcett or Lindsay Wagner or Linda Carter. These are stars that I identify with back in the youthful days 1970’s that I grew up in. These stars have faded and are replaced by a young hip crowd which I couldn’t keep track of except when I go to see a movie on the weekend. Anyways I enjoyed my chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits, and baked beans. I have placed this person on the back burner of my memory and I am enjoying my coffee while I decide on what to do for the rest of the day. I couldn’t imagine a world without my coffee my ego would be crushed.

"Interesting. There are some nice parts in there and I certainly didn't know you could get a buzz from Mountain Dew. Maybe space it out a little better, it will make it easier to read. It's a little awkward in parts but makes an interesting read anyway." -- kavya.
"Hi Nancy. Its an interesting story. I don't know if it should be in the poetry section. Or is it? I'm new here so not a good navigator yet. As kavya said, space it out a bit. I feel like its just you telling me how your day was. A bit disjointed too. Try a re-write. I'll be glad to re-read it and give you my thoughts again. Please feel free to read my stuff too and comment. " -- Jersey Mike, Belgium.
"I love pepsi!!!" -- Moses.
"Nancy, I think this is the first time I have read your stuff...I likded it. I agree that it might not be a poem...but good nevertheless" -- e. rocco caldwell.

"I think this is great writing. It follows the events and shows insightful thoughts of the writer as they are unfolding and not repackaged in a predetermined form. Really artistic. " -- Glendon DeWolfe, Williston, FLORIDA, United States.
