The Beagle
Amber A Whitman

To be perfectly honest, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed these days. You see our family has a bit of a dilemma facing us. We recently answered an ad we found in a nearby petshop. It was an ad giving away a free beagle. I thought since we have wanted a dog for so long, this was our chance. Last night was our first encounter with the dog. The current owner brought her to our house. She is bigger than we initially thought, and stronger too. Our cat was totally freaked out and jumped up on the kitchen ledge. The dog was growling at her. The cat was hissing at the dog. It was a little tense. However they seemed to calm down a little bit toward the end of the visit.

Tonight, we are waiting for the arrival of the beagle again. I just have to phone the owner. She will bring her over. I am very hesitant about keeping her. Now my boyfriend is too. She was abused apparently. Apparently another dog had attacked her. Then she was covered in a tar like substance. She has no formal training it seems. She does not seem to respond to simple commands. This is also a concern. However I am thinking we will give the trial period, which is the next few days a chance. The current owner even suggested we could give her back, if it doesn't work out. At least we have that to fall back on. I am a worrier by nature, so of course this is an overwhelming thought right now. I am hoping after spending some time with our family, she will adjust. I have already made it clear, I will not be taking on all the responsibilities where she is concerned. I am hoping the next few days will make up our minds. We will either have a new edition to our family, or not.

I think we have finally made up our minds. Or should I say, the decision was made for us. We were supposed to have time with the beagle last night. The woman did not return my call. I understand if something happened, but at least phone. I am totally fed up. I know we had our reservations to begin with. So when this happened last night, it kind of made the decision easier. I am not going to call again. If she calls me, I will just politely tell her our decision. It is too bad, because the dog would of had a good home with us. I hope he gets a good home. The thing was she did not really seem to want to part with the dog to begin with. It could have been anything really. Maybe that factored into her sudden apprehension. It is told that everything happens for a reason. I guess we are not meant to have a dog just yet.
