I’m going to try very hard to get way from the subject of reptiles for this book, really I am ... but not just yet eh?
Guess what's just sort of landed in my lap? I've always liked blue tongued skinks (though not as much as the prehensile (monkey tailed) skinks though) which are my all time favourites. Well I've just found myself saying yes to one. I rang to get a price for my live order today and Mel, the pet shop owner has two (unfortunately one is already reserved for somebody else) . They are teeny tiny babies about the size of a small rat pup ....but while my head was saying no, my gob was saying yes.
Waaaaay top heavy on price, they've gone through the roof since I last had them, and this little bugger's right at the top of the price scale, but too irresistible to say no to.
Skinks are a bit of a thing of mine. The last time I sold a blue tongue the price tag was thirty quid, these ays the standard price is a hundred and twenty. Yes, I know I'm going back fifteen years when dinosaurs walked the earth, and I know I'm going to have to catch up with the times .. but bloody hell!
I can't wait to see him though because from the description it sounds as though he may be one of the less common blueys. I was expecting the creamy grey body with bluish grey bands which is the most common, Eastern.
However from his description it sounds as though he may be a blotched, which aren't, or certainly weren't, as common in my day. Things may well have changed. I suppose if he isn't as common as an Eastern it may be reflective of the high price tag.
He is described as pale brown on his underside with orange and gold top colouration that looks a bit like a crocodile's back, which may well be a 'central' (pale head, orange body, beige bands) but from the description he sounds more like a blotched.... unless while I've been sleeping these past fifteen years, more subspecies or morphs have been created.
So, Roma is coming tomorrow.
Now I just have to work round Russ, who is lying in bed after a a hard night shift oblivious. He's not going to be happy.
I have just organised my life and my animals into neat matching vivs. My house has taken on order and looks like a home again, though most people coming in say it looks like a pet shop. Here we go again.with the make shift vivs until I order my next batch of six, no doubt, from the reppy room.
In the next couple of weeks I have coming.
1 Australian water dragon... Sorell
1 Chinese water dragon...Taipei
1 Blue tongued skink... Roma
1 blood python... Stoker (who isn't named after a township in their country of origin)
and ... hopefully ...if all goes well a red iguana.... Chiquita.
It's going to mean another four quarantine vivs in the bedroom for three months. Stoker, the blood python has his viv ready to go straight into but right at the other side of the room away from the lizards. It's going to be an exciting couple of weeks. Mind, Russ has thrown me into a panic today, some hold up on getting the glass for the monster viv, it's going to be the middle of next week before it comes. I can't wait to move my bosc monitor Assante. She's growing fast and I want to get her into a bigger vivarium quickly. However if I'm going to stick by the rules and quarantine for three months she's still got seven weeks to go ;-( The thing is, all of my existing animals are in tip top condition now. All fourteen are looking good and responding well, even Assante is making good progress with the taming, she let me hold her twice last night and only threatened me once. I'm quite sure that keeping her in that little viv is unnecessary .. but rules is rules... and oh boy have I learned my lesson about not following them... bugger.
