Hundreds upon hundreds of thousands fell regularly, embroiled in one of the bloodiest wars in human history. Fathers, brothers, husbands, friends dropped like flies in the trenches, their respective sides gaining just acres of land at the cost of a million dead. When the dust settled, millions had died, some civilians, some soldiers, in the pointless battles of World War I. To the victors belong the spoils, and the Allied powers saw this to fruition. They crafted a treaty that would cripple Germany for decades, complete with smothering economic and military limitations. Yet in this treaty, the Allies lay foundations for bitterness and bloodshed, Fascism and farce, Hitler and Holocaust.
Mankind puffed its chest at the formula for peace contained within this treaty. Its specifications contained our best chance at world peace, we thought. We ignored all the old tradition and boundaries, for mankind had moved past that stage. Allied powers must humble the Germans. Versailles forced Germany’s military into practical nonexistence, and billed their already ravaged treasury exorbitantly for the costs of the war. Inside its borders, hunger, crime, inflation, and poverty became rampant, all to compensate France for its casualties. Woodrow Wilson and the American committee showed up with demands that reeked of socialism. Wilson carved Europe, the Balkans, Africa, and the Middle East into arbitrary countries, all controlled by an arbitrary “League of Nations”.
This arbitrary carving led to arbitrary wars. Death and strife occurs to this day, everyday, in the world trouble spots of the Balkans and the Middle East. Versailles lumped together ethnic groups with intense hatred of each other within the same country. These people can not coexist together. Today, in Iraq, the ethnic difference between Kurds and Arabs causes border wars and conflicts. Strife has reigned after World War I in these newfound countries, citizens shocked at the fact that their enemies now ruled.
And in Germany, the Allies crowned chaos the country’s king. Helpless, the German government could only watch in horror as inflation ran rampant and poverty became widespread. Many people looked desperately for a political figure to pull Germany out of its trouble. Only one political group supported rejection of the impossible demands of Versailles. All others claimed such would lead to war. But this one political group, led by an enigmatic young man named Adolph Hitler, did not care for such petty squabbles. He stood determined to redeem Germany, at whatever the cost.
Suddenly, the world saw double, in an occasion of déjà vu. Hitler’s Fascist party took control of Deutschland, and ignored the Draconian standards of Versailles. War inevitably followed. Hundreds upon hundreds of thousands fell regularly, embroiled in one of the bloodiest wars in human history. Fathers, brothers, husbands, friends dropped like flies in the trenches, their sides gaining just acres of land at the cost of a million dead. When the dust settled, millions had died; some civilians, some soldiers, in the pointless battles of World War II. All thanks to the blind hubris of mankind.

"Much truth in what you have written. Even more incredulous was how Hitler managed to procure financial resources to re-build military hardware in a country ravaged by inflation and poverty. (There are several controversial theories about how the Nazi war machine was actually financed). He was obviously able to get the most out of a cheap labor force. A renewed nationalism inspired even by a lunatic can motivate laborers to monumental achievement. I love my country but there is a great deal of truth in your admonishment of the leaders of Westerm culture for their naivete' and arrogance to issue a mandate to people of eastern and middle east cultures who've shared centuries of hostility and hatred towards one another; "Now live together - be nice, don't fight." Well done. I still can't believe you're only sixteen. Maybe home schooling should be mandated. " -- Richard .
