The Wolf Prologue David B Doc Byron
They call me the Wolf.
They call me that because I'm sneaky, cunning, just like a wild animal. All of my senses are acute for my age; I have a nose like a bloodhound, the night vision of a cat. My hearing is finely tuned as well, I could hear a pin drop in a room full stampeding buffalo. As far as my sense of taste goes, well.... let's not go there. I'll just say that I enjoy the taste of guilty blood on my tongue, the taste of VICTORY. As far as my sense of touch, well.... it can be as gentle as a babysitter changing a diaper, or as painful as a jackhammer punch to your balls. I dont fuck around.
Now, don't get me wrong; I'm not a violent person by nature; but I grew up on the streets, attended the school of hard knocks. I slept under bridges, ate food that would make a billygoat puke. I could fuck or fight with the best of them by the time I was seventeen.
I guess you could say, I'm a self educated man.
Street smarts are the best ones; the more you screw up, the more you suffer, the more you LEARN. The more you learn, the more you don't tend to make the same mistakes again. No pain, no gain...man. Hunker down and toughen up, kiddies, just like I had to. You don't recieve any free gifts or special consideration in my goddam world; unless you do something to deserve it. You wipe your own ass, blow your own nose, and lick your own fucking wounds. And I'll tell you what; you better shitcan that silver spoon you were born with in your mouth; out here on my turf, you eat with your fingers.
My mama was a whore and my papa a rolling stone, literally. My mama made the night rounds for the rent money and my papa worked the days as an entrepreneur of sorts, selling anything from speeders and bootleg hooch to pussy. Ward and June Cleaver, he was not. And I didn't grow up in Mister Roger's neighborhood,, either. Mercifully, my mama died from a drug overdose when I was eight years old. But, then, they locked up my old man in prison on aggravated assault charges, where he died with a homemade shank in his neck made from a toothbrush and a spoon. I heard he never saw it coming.
Lucky him, unlucky me.
I knew what was coming next for me.
I was sent to live with my Aunt Ida, a Bible toting, profanity spewing hypocrite with a holier than thou attitude and a taste for alcohol and pain killers. One night, when I was fifteen, after she'd put out a smoke on my right forearm, I'd decided it was time to blow that popstand, go out and see the world, and ''find myself.'' And find my sorry ass if exactly what I did. But; not before I met Doc.
Doc was a former Marine drill instructor and street saviour who ran a homeless shelter for runaway teens. He'd found me laying in an alley one night, beaten, bloody, and pennieless. On the streets, people will beat the shit out of you for a half pack of stale smokes or a piece of Juicy Fruit gum.
Anyways, he'd found me, taken me home, {with him} cleaned me up, bandaged my wounds, gave me a place to crash, some good chow. But....the most important thing he'd given me... was good advice. ''You don't have to be TOUGH to be HUMAN,'' he told me one time, after I'd gotten my ass kicked by a much bigger opponent. ''Sometimes, tough helps, yes, but it isn't a mandatory EMOTION or ACTION, in every situation or conversation, just to get your point across.''
Sometimes, actions spoke louder than words, sometimes they didn't. I had learned to harness the concept of when it WAS mandatory, and when it WASN'T. The concept had helped to save my life over the years; I miss Doc, now. He was my mentor, my HERO. He might as well have been my PAPA. You can have any other cardboard movie hero like Clint or the Duke; I'LL take DOC.
I live in a basement now.
It's clean; and it's not infested with rats, mice, roaches, or any other kind of vermin known to man. It consists of one large room and one small bathroom. The larger room houses a fold out bed, a couch and matching loveseat, a coffee table, and a 19 inch color TV with a built in VCR. I also have three handmade wooden shelves filled with books by my favorite authors; Mickey Spillane, Dashiel Hammet, Jim Thompson, some very welcome Elmore Leonard. You can have the fucking wussies writing crime fiction today; they wouldn't know a real tough guy if one walked up behind them and shot them in the ass with a .38 special. Now, my bathroom is small, but it serves it's purpose. I installed the bathtub/shower combo myself; Doc had instructed me in the fine arts of plumbing during my stint with him, which wasn't long enough.
I also have a large but ancient desk that sits in the middle of the room, with two K-Mart brand folding chairs that sit in front of it. These chairs are for my ''Clients.''
I have a quite a list of clients that pass through my doors on a regular basis; the rich, the poor, the abused, the broken hearted. They all have one thing in common; they are in need of my ''services.'' Whether it's finding a long lost love or breaking the arm of a man who's molested some welfare mother's child, I'm your man. And my fees are reasonable, too. If...not not downright goddam cheap. You see; with me, payment is just seing justice done. Most of the time, that is. I have to eat too.
So, if you're ever in the neighborhood, and need a helping hand, drop by. BUT....if you come on to my turf, and you're looking for TROUBLE.... ...I'd think TWICE.
Because if I get wind of it, your ASS is MINE. I'd be looking over my shoulder, and ready to rumble. For I am the EQUALIZER, the man with the plan, the MASTER OF DISASTER, the Big Boss Man. I'm the HMIC. Head Motherfucker In Charge. I'm the master of my domain, and the KING OF PAIN.
I'm your worst nightmare come reality.
And I don't walk softly, BUT, I do carry a big stick. And; I fear no evil, for I am the meanest, ugilest, toughest sonofabitch in the valley... AMEN.
That's why they call me the WOLF.

""I dont fuck around.""Ward and June Cleaver, he was not.""And find my sorry ass if exactly what I did.""If...not not downright goddam cheap." Just thought I would point out a few mistakes while I was at it. I could have used someone like this a few times in my life. Maybe you could go back and "fix" the MF in the first chapter of my story.
