The Horror Of Cadia Matthew Robert Stovell
As the Imperial defence force made their way through the battled streets of Cadia, everything was quiet maybe too quiet. The men had spent the last 3 days under continuous fire and now suddenly the only noise that they could hear was the sound of their boots on the floor and the noise of their breathe as they ran round the corner of a long and poorly lit street. The power had been out for 2 days and the only light was from the searchlights of the tanks and the explosions of weapons fire. The sun had been covered by thick smoke for weeks now and only very rarely would there be a sudden gleam of light passing through the thick smoke. But with no weapons fire and the nearest tank being about a mile away the men of the defence force were worried and feared for a sneak attack on such an easy target.
Every now and then the Guardsmen would see a sudden shadow pass a doorway or pass quickly across the street behind then. This is what scared them the most. In the dim light of the cloud covered sun there was barely a shadow but for whatever it was the lack of light made no difference. This creature would pass by and there would just be a pitch-black shape. This creature was darkness embodied. No light could be seen through it nothing. If it passed between you and your best friend you wouldn’t be able to see them just a black barrier quickly pass by.
As the Guardsmen went around a corner on their check of the area they found themselves walking into a very big shadow they lost sight of each other they were isolated by a shadow of pitch darkness. Some people went crazy in this darkness and their morale was already low, this just pushed them to the edge and they went into a fit of screams of fear. They had been running around the city for about an hour and a half with little light and little conversation to boost moral.
The Sergeant of the squad shouted out to see if anyone was near but his voice couldn’t be heard from anyone but himself. He then had a sudden surge of fear pass through him as from the darkness a body was walking towards him as if answering his call, but as he walked towards the person he realised that it wasn’t someone from his squad or even someone at all. The thing just looked at him with empty eyes. There was no sign of fear of this sudden darkness or pity for the Sergeant it had just found it was just an empty look. The Sergeant notices the dumb look on the things face and its low moan as it walks. The Sergeant thinks straight away of a zombie.
The zombie just carried on walking towards him at a slow pace but even though the Sergeant was trying to run from this zombie he couldn’t get away from it, it just stayed at his heels like a small dog. The Sergeant turned around and pulled out his pistol to find that the zombie wasn’t alone. There were now two of them close behind the zombie. He looks around to find that these zombies have surrounded him and they are now getting closer by the second. The Sergeant straightens up with a sudden burst of adrenaline, aims his pistol at the chest of closest zombie. He pulls the trigger and the shot flies straight and hits the zombie in its left lung but the zombie just flinched at this wound when an ordinary person would be on the ground in pain, struggling to breathe. These zombies wouldn’t stop coming at him. He pulls up his pistol again and fires one of the other zombies in the head. The head exploded with a blood-curdling scream. The zombies flesh was projected everywhere and the Sergeant was hit square in the face with a great big chunk of muscle from the zombie’s neck. The zombies still didn’t show any sign of fear with the fact that one of them had just had its head removed, it seemed like they hadn’t even heard the scream.
As the Sergeant aimed his pistol at one of the zombies in front of him a degrading hand had already grabbed his arm from behind and was now trying to force the weapon out of his hand with a knife that was stained with blood. The sergeant pulled out his sword and made a swing for the zombie and managed to cut the arm away from his but the zombie’s other arm made a dive and the blood stained knife went straight into the Sergeant’s leg. With a scream of pain the Sergeant dropped to the floor and managed to cut the face of the zombie as he fell. But the zombie crouched down over his body and started stabbing at his leg. The screams of the Sergeant seemed to be fuelling the passion of the Zombie and every time he would scream the zombie would stab again. After a while the Zombie had stabbed him in the abdomen and the Sergeant didn’t scream that time but went limp. The Zombie had made a fatal blow and now the Sergeant died with three fifths of his blood around him seeping through the knife wounds in his leg.
This didn’t just happen to the Sergeant though everyone who made a noise caught the attention of these zombies. The people who went into fits of screaming were first on the list as the zombie’s passion overflowed with screams from these people. After that came the Sergeant then any one else who made a noise. After a while the shadow passed and all evidence of the deaths of these people were lost. The corpses were removed but the bloods stayed were it fell and there were only 2 survivors of this shadow but they went back to the base with diminished hopes of ever winning this war. Especially when there are enemies such as this shadow out there in the streets of Cadia.
