Daughter Of The Moon Amaranth Knight
I awoke to the sweet smells of spice and incense.
The scent of Alexandria was so refreshing in the
morning when I had first woken up. Pillars of
alabaster and marble decorated each hall in
beautiful endless rows hung with silk going from
column to column. Everyone was hurrying around the
palace like they did every morning but today was
different. It was my brother's and my fifth
birthday. The same day as the Winter Solstice.
Choeak (December) the twenty fifth. I was excited
and had barely gotten any sleep the night before.
All the servants greeted me and bowed but they
were very quick about it because of the hurry they
were all in.
I ran out to the stables where my half-brother,
Caesarian, was. He was grooming his horse, the
usual work of a servant, but he preferred to do it
himself. He barely payed any attention to me or
Alexander so we made it our business to stay out
of his way. One memory I had was of me when I was
two running to him and hugging his leg and he just
kicked me aside and said something to my mother
about how boring I was.
It was then I noticed a stable that was boarded up
but I could still hear an animals hoofbeats in
there.
"Caesarian?" I asked timidly.
"What Selene?" He replied looking at me with his
honey brown eyes, almost startled.
"What's in there?"
"Nothing that concerns little girls such as
yourself." He smiled softly at me and how my
brother had a beautiful smile. No wonder the girls
went wild when they saw him!
"But why must they keep the horse boarded up like
that?" Figuring it was safe enough, I walked up
beside him and picked up a brush and began
brushing the horse.
Caesarian quickly slapped my hand away. He was too
territorial sometimes. "Some things are for a
reason and they will reveal themselves in due
time." I could see him smirk and then he walked
past me ruffling my golden locks lovingly.
Was this really my brother? He never ruffled my
hair or smiled at me. Maybe he was being nice to
me because of my birthday. Who knew?
I shrugged my shoulders and skipped along to the
throne room happily humming a tune that one of the
musicians had played once.
As expected, my mother was there. Head held high,
crook and flail in each hand. She wore a very long
flowing robe trying to deceive everyone into
thinking that she was not pregnant again. But she
hid it nicely. I loved to watch my mother in the
gardens sometimes and I loved to watch her and my
father dance, or argue, or even just lay around
together in the sun. I ran up to the arm of the
throne and hopped up on there to sit. The man that
was receiving audience looked at me bewildered.
"Do you see something that is wrong?" My mother
asked directing the man's attention back to her.
"N-no your majesty. Nothing at all." He replied.
My mother got a faint smile on her lips but hid it.
"Good, now continue Eros."
"These are private affairs your majesty." He
smiled unsure of what to do. What did my dad have
to say? Why did he send Eros here? My father was
in Armenia about to gain allegiance against
Octavian. Maybe something went wrong. What if my
dad was dead? This last thought sent goose bumps
running up my body. I had to stay and find out!
"Unless my daughter's, Antony's daughter's, ears
are too delicate you will speak freely of what my
husband has to say." I let out a small laugh at
what my mother just said.
"Lord Antony wishes you to go to him in Armenia.
He feels he needs you there for morale support and
*clear throat* other reasons." Eros replied
looking down onto the marble floor.
"Why didn't you say so?" My mother then jumped
from her throne and walked briskly out of the
throne room.
Had she forgotten my birthday? She was leaving!
She was leaving to be with my father! I felt like
I mattered little to her then. I silently slid
into the throne and there I curled up and went to
sleep but it was not at all comfortable I might
add.
I remember awakening to my brother's ,
Alexander's, voice. I opened my eyes and screamed
he was so close to me and it makes you skin jump
when someone's leaning over you watching you while
you sleep.
My twin laughed "HAHA! You should've seen your
face! You were like, AAAAAAAAAA!!! It was
hilarious!" He was holding his sides and was
nearly on the floor with laughter.
I did not see anything funny. He had scared the ka
right out of me! All right. Maybe it was a little
funny. But never the less I stood stone still.
"Where's mother?" He asked trying to get control
of himself.
"She's packing to leave us." I replied.
"Why? Where is she going?"
"Father wants her to join him in Armenia." With
that I stomped out of the throne room and went out
to the gardens alone. I saw my reflection in the
fountain and I just sat there staring for a long
while until Charmian, one of my mother's
handmaidens, came out to get me.
"Queen Cleopatra would like to see you now."
