Chapter One
The seven-thirty bell rang, allowing the students of Greene High another five minutes until they were tardy. A group of seniors walking down the hallway were laughing. One of the jocks had told a story of how he had given a freshman a hard time yesterday, and it seemed funny to the others but the other three students walked over to me.
“Hey what’s up?” Chandler called over the laughter of the jocks and their jokes. He was my best friend since grade school. Now, even as seniors, we still acted like stupid four-year-olds. But who didn’t now-a-days? I nodded back and carried my attention over to Jessica.
“Hey, how are you Hun?” I said. She embraced me tightly, as if we hadn’t seen each other all winter break long. We actually spent every second together. “Nice to see you too, Jessica.” I laughed. Once I got her off, I noticed the glow of her skin I had not yet noticed. Not that she didn’t have a glow at all, but this glow was more profound and defined around every inch of her body. It was like a florescent glow underneath her skin. Jessica was in her usual dark-blue jeans, her maroon tee, and her black jacket with a fox fur inside. At the moment she had her hood up, fur covering most of her deep brown hair and part of the green eyes. Fortunately, you could see the gold flecks in her glassy irises.
“Hey dude.” Victoria calmly said with the boredom of our long, good stare at each other. Victoria was dressed in her favorite, black. Black boots, black, ripped, net-like tights, a black mini skirt, black-rubber bracelets, black nails, black eye shadow and eyeliner, black earrings, and a black and white, striped tee. The only thing non-black was her lips, blood-red.
“How’s it going?” I answered. Victoria was one of the weirdest people I’d ever met. I can admit it without regret. But I love her because she’s her. My “sister” as I like to think. To her, I am her “teddy”. Believe it or not, but Victoria is the most affectionate of the four of us. I looked at the clock to my left. Seven-seventeen. We had three minutes to walk to the other side of the hallway. Literally. The four of us had first period together in room three-fifty.
“Well, Chandler, what did you do over winter break?” I asked. It was the same question I always asked, every year, and I always got the same response.
“I was with V.” Whoa, shocker. Usually he went fishing (no comment, I know). But to spend winter break with Victoria was….whoa. I tried hard not to laugh.
“So, you and Chandler-,” I began. Motioning towards Victoria.
“I know isn’t like awesome?”
“Congrats!” Jessica broke in. “Hey, the bell’s about to ring, Jack, let’s go.” She grabbed my arm, and we took off, leaving Chandler and V to themselves for the last two minutes before class started.
Once I walked in the room, I smelled the aroma of Mrs. Schafer. The old geezer was in her seventies, wore only pink, had a squeaky voice, and was obsessed with novelty owl knick-knacks. The weird part was; she smelled like peppermint, pipe tobacco, and old-people soap. (please insert spine shiver here)
Mrs. Schafer wasn’t that good with her eyes, so It was easy to text in her class. The first one I received was from Chandler.
-So what did YOU do over the break?
--I was with Jessica, as usual.
-Anything new?
--Yes
-And. . .
--Ok, fine. Yes, now lay off!
-Ha. Told you it’ll happen!
--w/e, get to work.
The next text was from Victoria.
-So Chandler tells me Teddy has some news?
--O my God, what did he tell you?
-What did he NOT!
--O.
-Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.
Finally, Jessica texted me.
-Hey
--Sup
-Nothin, so what did you think of the break. . .
--O it was..awesome
-I hoped so.
--cool
- I gotta tell you something
--Later, ok? We got this paper to do.
-k.
I turned to look at Jessica, then at Victoria who winked. Once I turned to face Chandler, he just shook his head up and down with a smug smile and an ear to ear grin. No comment.
Later, maybe thirty minutes had passed, my hand sent continuous pain signals to my head. Jessica texted me four times since the last. I still wondered about what she had to say. But the messages would have to wait. It was three minutes later till the bell rang.
Finally seventh period came around, the second class Jessica, Victoria and Chandler had together. I took my seat in the far right corner, Jessica by my side. Chandler was in front of me and Victoria took her place to my left. Mr. Vallice walked through the doors in no time.
Mr. Vallice taught literature. I know. And on top of that, he had issues. There was an anger issue and he also had this issue with being a lot like a therapist, always getting inside your head. He always picked me too. Only because I was dating his daughter, Jessica. Oh, Joy.
The first half of the period was fine, the four of us texting, enjoying our time. Vallice assigned an essay on Romeo and Juliet Act 2 and I was beyond schoolwork. The sound of the clock ticked away in my brain, causing a headache. Soon, I started humming to myself. No one seemed to notice except for Vallice. Senior year is so far boring.
“Jack.” He said in his second tenor voice, reeling me in like all therapists do.
“Yes, Mr. Vallice.” I answered.
“Bring your phone to me, texting is not allowed, phones are not allowed to be precise.” Mr. V was very up to date when it came to the law.
I handed him my phone, with a smile, but inside I was devastated. Now I had fifteen minutes to sit and look interested in my essay, which had not been started.
Mr. Vallice looked through the phone, the beeps and dings of the buttons wandering throughout the room. He didn’t seem to find anything amusing or fascinating.
“Change of plans students.” Mr. Vallice said. “I want you all to get a piece of paper and right down your name, height, weight, and address. Turn it in to me before you leave. This is mandatory.” The entire time he was saying this, Mr. Vallice stared directly at me. A shiver ran through my body, I then felt the true coarseness of the desk below my fingers because my senses tripled, I could smell the sweat leaving my body, I could hear Mr. Vallice’s steady heart beat, and my veins almost bursting. My teacher was going to stock me down, like a drug dog, he was going to kill me. For what I did not know, Mr. Vallice was going to kill me.
I did what he said, even though I knew the reason. At least I would die doing the “right” thing. The honest thing. Jessica looked at me, at for an odd reason perhaps; she knew the reason behind this madness. She started to cry in her hands.
The bell rang. I walked over to Mr. Vallice’s desk and dropped the sheet of paper, sealing the deal. Jessica was behind me. She stared down her father until he solemnly said “It is for best Jessica. Even you must understand that.”
“You’re no father of mine.” She replied. Jessica then ripped of the charm bracelet Mr. Vallice gave to her last summer as a graduation gift.
Jessica took my arm into hers and walked with her head held high, mascara running down her face. I was so confused At this point. The other arm went for her stomach; she clutched it like she was going to be sick. Come to think of it, she has done that for the whole winter break, a month maybe to be more correct.
“It’s going to be ok.” I told her, grabbing her hand that was around her stomach.
She pushed away. “No it’s not! You don’t understand. He won’t ever give up. He won’t stop.”
The memory of Mr. Vallice came back to me. “I was going to run. I’m smarter than you think.”
“And my father is smarter than you think!” She raised her voice high than before.
I walked to my Audi with Jessica. We climbed into the seats and buckled up tightly. I started the car, turning on the heater.
We drove as far away as we could think, Crossfire Forest. It wasn’t an actual forest; it was a shopping strip complete with Italian. Pulling into Carino’s parking lot started up the stomach growling. Jessica wiped off her ruined layer of makeup and began to do it over again. Jessica and I walked through the double doors, waiting for our plans and secrets to unravel.
