TITLE (EDIT)
Crooked Mile
DESCRIPTION
A troubled teen comes from a broken family , living in the ghetto where her skin color makes her a target. So she begins criminal behavior when she is bullied at school and forced to fight led her to being arrested several times. She gets expelled, moves to another ghetto and fails to go to school everyday because her ditching is leading to getting high with her dad and friends and neighbors where the methamphetamine epidemic is troubling. Another teen looses herself, decides to drop out because working full time job to pay rent at 15 was too hard. Then at 15 she is institutionalized at a juvenile correctional facility for negligent homicide and is released at 16 as an emancipated adult.

Crooked Mile
Diana Angela Chang

She comes from a crooked mile
And still manages to smile
Keeps on chasing dreams worthwhile
Developed more than just a style
Takes on each and every trial
Like most her life’s not been perfected
Never has she felt protected
Been chewed up, spit out and rejected
She’s feeling disconnected
Hood life kicks in, she’s infected
A future not yet projected
She’s skipping classes and electives
Doesn’t know her own objectives
Alone because she is misunderstood
Minority white girl living in the hood
She knows silence is for her own good
If she could speak up she would
But it’s more complex
Enemies speaking foreign dialects
Fighting is what comes next
Outnumbered, she earned her respect
Arrested for assault
Even though it wasn’t her fault

She minds her own business
Keeps a smile through all the stress
Keeps getting put to the test
She’s pleading no contest
She is standing out from the rest
But she’s not giving it her best
She knows that she’s still blessed
That heart beating in her chest
Filled with love, courage and zest
Even when she was small
She protected them all
From bullies big and tall
So she’s naturally led to brawl
But only to answer the call

Time passes, it begins to take a toll
Split in pieces instead of a whole
It starts to wear down her soul
She’s still working on the same goal
She’s got nothing in her bowl
But her cup is overflowing
She goes on well knowing
Emotions uncontrollably showing
It keeps her from growing
She’s handling all that’s on her plate
Keeping her mind in the right state
She’s carrying a lot of weight
Coming home high and late
The consequences were great
The law stepped in, a new cell mate
At 16 she gets a clean slate

Her classes are marking absences
She doesn’t advance
But her mind still wanders
A drop outs still ponder
She’s beyond her years
Smarter than most peers
Through all the painful years
She’s numb and unable to shed tears
Fifteen with a job and no friends
What kind of message that sends
Pride fully she fakes it, pretends
Under the radar she descends
Opens her eyes
And to her surprise
She is all grown up
Never been able to dump her overflowing cup
In a lot of pain, it’s hard to get up
She crawls into herself, but never gives up
