The Incurable Cynic
Richard Koss

A contemptuous disbelief in
human goodness and sincerity.
The incurable cynic, that’s me.
When compliments are paid,
and don’t get me wrong,
they’re not that many,

I still wonder. I always have.

What do they want from me?
No doubt, something in return.
Sometimes I’d find out right away.
Other times, I never did.
Oh, some were sincere, I guess.
Then again, maybe not.

It’s hard to tell, there’s so many
who believe their own bullshit.
So many who say they care.
They love everyone.
Share your joy, feel your pain.
What do they want? I wonder.

Everybody wants something.
That’s just the way it is.
It’s human nature to be selfish,
to give in order to get.
It’s true today just as it
was, so many years ago.

I can still hear her voice,
see the look on her face,
when she said, “I love you.”
Why should I believe her?
Why would she love me?
Although its been years,

I still wonder. I always have.
