ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
Who me? Born in 1962. Wrote prolifically as a teenager, heavily influenced by books & the music of the time. Stopped writing for 20 years more or less. But started again... Some of the work here dates from the "early period" - 1979-1982. The rest is since 2000. I`ve no idea whether I`m a better writer now or then. Maybe I was never any good! I`ve always wondered. Feedback most welcome...
I've not visited this site at all since January 2006 as I shortly after discovered the unfettred joys of blogging. I'm still writing and actually had a very good summer of writing. I'm posting a recent poem here now but all my recent work is available on my blog - take a look - http://peter-rivendell-poems.blogspot.com/
[December 2006]

Triptych Peter Rivendell
The actor
At parties you sit and stare, admiration fills your side-glances.
You`re just an actor in a trying role,
Which you wrote for yourself from Thirties literature.
Selling out from behind a curtain,
But miming the words in public view.
Anger is your purest emotion,
If you can only keep it on the rails.
Rails that you laid at another’s silent bidding.
A daring admission of guilt.
Stark landscapes are your ideal backdrop,
A european movie played out in your mind.
Sequences quiver and grey light diffused with soft light
Symbolises some inner struggle or emotional triumph.
Strangely, you`re are at your classic best
As a tragic hero in a jet-black comedy.
A part you only play in real life
When an audience is there.
Like the true artist, you make your demands
And your demands are easily met.
No, they don`t appreciate you…
The projectionist
I can see that you are frightened,
When you see your name in the family “Bible”.
The years look down on you,
And you make yourself feel small.
Walking in the street, it seems to weigh down so hard on you.
I know you wonder if you`ll ever feel complete.
And when even the shadows seems to threaten,
Voices crawl inside of you.
And when the people listen,
It`s only you being silent and proud.
But inside you`re still ashamed.
Sometimes you look in windows that you pass
And see reflected there
The distorted view of a projectionist,
And you try to change the reel.
You deceive with opaque appearances,
Exercising your right to your own kind of armour, like anyone else.
But in ten years time, will the armour still fit?
In ten years time, will you still care?
Dribbles of misunderstood psychology filter through,
Glib excuses which you ignore or dismiss,
But believing every one in your heart.
The idle dreamer
In the dark, when the pulse is ponderous and steady,
You plan it all out.
You`d be a communist if you could ever ignore the demands of reality.
But your awareness of civil time
Is what allows you your dreams.
And when the daylight comes,
The dreams are as hard to catch as the fleeting shadows that
Taunt the sun.
As if taunting the sun was in your power,
As if any constructive change could come from your midnight hours.

"I'm very impressed with your writing. Smooth and well thought out. My only down side comment is, I would have preferred a little more punch. Although, in general I still enjoyed these poetry pieces. " -- Ulysses Hero, England.
