As I Reach Home On A Rainy Morning
Ramkumar Menon

The Gods own country calls me back.
My mind travels in waves of colours
as I swim through the music of my younger days.

I remember them , when I was free, my lips were pregnant
with beaming smiles , and my legs carried me wherever
they wanted me to go , as I moved a free soul , on the soil I was born on.

Festivals, ponds, backwaters and cultures,
a cornucopia of traditions blanketed my land like a gleaming foil,
that even the Gods from the sky would have been surprised to see a shining star on the ground.

As I enter the land, the smell of earth wakes me up , the rain had scented the land .
The cool breeze embraces the trees, as they wave me welcome to my home.
Shining diamonds crowning the grasses, grazing goats in the lush green meadows
look up to see me back home.

Shining faces of children dressed in white and blue, smiling and talking all the way to school waved at me as I moved along into the depth of my homeland.
The paddy fields shone a fluorescent green as the morning sun lighted up in full glory,
a sight for the eyes, as I turned aside to enjoy the scenery.

The temples on the way were fresh as ever , ‘nanthiarvattoms’ bordering them all around,
Fresher were the young women who plucked one or two of them, and adorned their hair,
well groomed after their early bath.

I passed a few small hotels, they offered me appam and puttu , and a cup of fresh bru coffee to wash them down, and then I moved along , closer to my home.

As time went on, so did the change come in, the fields and temples had disappeared,
replaced by a range of shops and offices.
And then came the Alwaye bridge, I felt I was almost there.

The water in the periyar deep and full, just like a beautiful lady,
as I was enthralled in the view of the Sun lighting up the river and giving me a better view.

Soon I reached home, but the journey shall linger,
I have reached home long back …I felt a heartbeat telling my heart.
I closed my eyes , a second or more, and wished I could be here for more.
