You Deserved It All Toluwalope Olugbenga Ogunlesi
YOU DESERVED IT ALL Everywhere my walk leads me Trees long plundered by harmattan Sprout the words I should never Have spoken to you. I should have kept them Deep in the mines of my mind Where emotions rage like molten ore But that Saturday night I reached Down the cold lonely shafts Narrow as oesophagus A desperate prospector for the anger Eating at me like an ulcer I thought of the sense Of accomplishment I’d gain Bringing everything to the surface To scald you just a bit, pay you Back for treating me bad But it was hotter than I thought Or you were more fragile Than I believed So now I hold you in my hands Black ash like burnt paper Even when I whisper I’m sorry, my breath blows you Away into the wind. I have damaged you And me even more A hole lies on the surface Of my mind, where the words Spurted out Still you treated me bad Like an appendix So I will spend My days Convincing myself You deserved it all
