TITLE (EDIT)
Afraid Of Buildings
DESCRIPTION
Written one unhappy morning, but I got a poem out of it...
[132 words]
AUTHOR
Peter Rivendell
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Who me? Born in 1962. Wrote prolifically as a teenager, heavily influenced by books & the music of the time. Stopped writing for 20 years more or less. But started again...
Some of the work here dates from the "early period" - 1979-1982. The rest is since 2000.
I`ve no idea whether I`m a better writer now or then. Maybe I was never any good! I`ve always wondered.
Feedback most welcome...

I've not visited this site at all since January 2006 as I shortly after discovered the unfettred joys of blogging. I'm still writing and actually had a very good summer of writing. I'm posting a recent poem here now but all my recent work is available on my blog - take a look - http://peter-rivendell-poems.blogspot.com/

Afraid Of Buildings
Peter Rivendell

I feel like a shadow of my former self,
Only too aware I can still be seen.
But when I look in the mirror,
I see a man stretched thin and older,
My surface a thin sheet of ice,
Movement beneath the surface.
A layer that cracks at the slightest disturbance.

How can I know I have so much?
Whilst spending so much time feeling I have nothing?
Fearing I amount to nothing.
Love and home should be everything,
But move out of sight, reassurance disappears.
I`m the lone victim of all my fears.
The cold, wet streets uselessly welcoming.
Afraid of buildings.
Empty structures wreathed in desolate mist.
So much life being lived,
So many opportunities missed.

But the mask stays on,
Fearing to alarm
With the bloodied, wounded mess beneath.
Holding on and holding my breath
Through gritted teeth.
Windswept bleakness with no inner peace.
In what hidden place did I lose my self-belief?

"Peter, this is quite real - I think all of us at one time or another get this feeling and you captured it quite well. I'm a bit surprised this didn't elicit more comments." -- Just A Guy.
"I can relate to this,as im stuck in London, not too happy at the moment, too much rubbish happening. It just goes to show humans are not meant to live within the concrete.Nice" -- Stuart Eric Longridge, Belfast.
"Peter, despite my tirade on Kendalls site I do really enjoy this piece. Intensively evocative and as 'Just a guy' says something we all experience. Not sure about the 'cold wet streets uselessly welcoming' doesn't quite flow though." -- me.
