DESCRIPTION
This poem was inspired by the Berlin novels of Christopher Isherwood (which inspired the musical "Cabaret"). It`s a story set at the moment when you realise that while you`ve been oblivious to events going on around you, things have changed fundamentally, and you find yourself in terrible danger. So I guess it`s appropriate at this point in our history when we are at the brink of a war*, the consequences of which we cannot begin to imagine. Or, it`s just a bit of "divine decadence" set in the 30`s... *this description was written just before the start of the Iraq War. The poem incidentally, was written in 1981. [251 words]
ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
Who me? Born in 1962. Wrote prolifically as a teenager, heavily influenced by books & the music of the time. Stopped writing for 20 years more or less. But started again... Some of the work here dates from the "early period" - 1979-1982. The rest is since 2000. I`ve no idea whether I`m a better writer now or then. Maybe I was never any good! I`ve always wondered. Feedback most welcome...
I've not visited this site at all since January 2006 as I shortly after discovered the unfettred joys of blogging. I'm still writing and actually had a very good summer of writing. I'm posting a recent poem here now but all my recent work is available on my blog - take a look - http://peter-rivendell-poems.blogspot.com/

Magazine Peter Rivendell
There are no nights anymore,
Only days that turn black.
Our words sag limply.
Failed attempts at communication
Can only intensify the stricken calm which descends.
We descend with it.
Maybe it`s right to be nervous now...
When we welcome uninvited shades of grey
If only because they are familiar.
There are no chalk marks on the Berlin walls.
There is no tragedy.
Neither is there comedy.
We`d run for cover,
But they`re shooting over our heads.
We`ve waited in railway stations,
Startled by the steam
Sending clouds into the air,
Obscuring and alluring,
Like the footlights on a stage.
We have performed and failed to make the grade.
Alternative salvation derides us into flight.
Maybe it`s right to be nervous now...
In the nightclubs where once we laughed
And were not afraid,
Men of honour dance with girls who have not
The animal grace of our old companions.
There is no place for us anymore.
We talk of art where integrity plays,
Censure our tongues and our memory games,
Think of comrades we could not save
In the restaurant that blood stained today.
Only hours ago our names were our pass,
They`re now our liability,
Secret of our ability.
Now young Germany joins a different kind of club,
One of uniforms and league with the past.
The only league we had was League of Nations.
Impound my car and rip the suit from my back,
There is a steamship and I won`t retract
My brave commitment in the face of guns.
If we could only leave the city we`d be safe
To earn our freedom from the past,
But when the night will come,
We cannot say.
Maybe it`s right to be nervous now...
I see my face in an American magazine.
