The Trees On Mckinley Avenue
E Rocco Caldwell

This avenue labors a fair piece east.
It takes me to my mother's house.
On my way
Lines the trees
Planted when I was young
I meet a friend
Worn as the place we stand in
His breath reeks of habit
His eyes speaks of the past
He walks backward to keep from getting lost
He tells me something
Concerning the trees
Some are dwarfs
Some are saplings
All are dreams
Suddenly he cries
His sobs land lightly on the trees
The gentle rustle of their leaves

He knows my name
      I fumble with his
His ashen face
Boney fingers
The tremble in his lips
Lack any grace
He'll never be free of this place
This place of my mother's
He walks away
Stopping only to sip from a bottle
Cramped in a brown paper bag
A notion shrugs me
In my mind
That he seems smaller
Then when we were young
