How Are You?
Just Jenn

“How are you?”
“I’m fine”, I said
You smiled and walked away
You didn’t really see me
Or hear what I had to say
I could have shared my problems
But you didn’t want to know
I said what you expected
And you were free to go

Waiting at the grocery store
The clerk asked, “How are you?”
Her concentration quickly turned
To pushing items through
“My leg fell off, the hamster died”
“I wrecked my car today”
“That’s nice”, she said
Gave me my change
And sent me on my way

How often have you asked someone
“How are you today”?
Then turned your thoughts to something else
Not hearing what they say
What if we really listened
To make sure that things were “Fine”
How many people could we help
If we just took the time
