ABOUT THE AUTHOR
First, let me say the most important thing. I would love to hear your comments. Now, a piece about me. It's been a while since I've dusted off the "quill" (or should I say keyboard?). In the meantime, I've found that I am now a Junior in College pursuing a career in psychiatry. I am certainly older and hopefully a bit wiser too. As always, I hope you enjoy my work and that it will jumpstart your inquisitive nature. Read on!

The Harbinger's Herald
Daniel Birnbaum

“There was fear here,” the mother warned the child.
Japanese men smiled uncomfortably,
& American soldiers shot the Japanese men.
What a tribute to their expired comrades.

A nation was caught asleep
By exploding glass
And sheering metal girders
A sound imprinted itself upon the collective mind.

“There was lack of understanding here,” the mother cautioned the child.
British soldiers came to protect an empire.
But they forgot the culture around them.
Life was the back payment the tribesman collected.

A President sounded his herald’s horn.
“Awake mighty nation, you are threatened.”
But what could possibly harm a nation sustained by ideas?
Was the threat physical or abstract?

“There was pridefulness here,” the mother cautioned the child.
A Roman empire thought
It could bestow all power into the hands of one man
And withstand the same corruption and destruction an Emperor’s character faced.

He invoked the weapons trained upon children.
He illuminated organized men dedicating their lives towards your life’s end.
But all he meant was he felt something wrong in part of the world.
Communication is the key.

“There was a true heart here,” the mother beckoned the child.
This man lost his riches and needed a meal.
His benefactor gave him charity without even knowing his name
His benefactor understood there was a need.
