Failure, Of Course, Is As Dreary Marie Karr
) failure, of course, is as dreary
failure, of course, is as dreary
as the sky that wept above me
on a dark cavern I have descended
and it was as laborious as the ascent
failure, is, of course---
as heavy as my nose
as clogged as the head truncated
as bleak as the splattering salt
as insolent as a surprise
as weak as the blood on my eyes
as fitting as a torn stocking
as naughty as a snot
with failure, of course, something
must be indicted. Would I point to a jinx?
Fiddlesticks! To succeed
simply is to belong to the earth
and all the banality written on it
Since I am unearthly, I do not
find sympathy, not even
A nod of the head or a plunge into the depth
amongst the wide-eyed motes
Of this air I inhale.
but if failure is the unrest
until my fingers and eyes have divest
the Black Curtain on my head
How powerful this failure is!
