ABOUT
THE AUTHOR
Currently a resident of Atlanta, Georgia, I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Since the age of 10, I have been writing poetry and recently expanded my portfolio to include novels, essays, plays, and children’s stories. In addition to being a writer, I am also a public speaker/performer. I have been a public speaker/performer since the age of 18. Although most of my works, and words, reflect my experiences as an African American woman in America, I am a very versatile writer/speaker/performer. When giving a performance, I seek to educate, entertain, motivate, and empower through a combination of speech, poetry, song, and movement. To date, I have given a total of sixty-one (61) performances. Some of my performance credits include: Opened for Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee (Otelia Cromwell Day, Smith College); Media One Talent Showcase; The Department of Justice Martin Luther King Day Celebration; "Poetry in Black" (PBS television program); National Black Arts Festival; Uptown Comedy Corner; Sweet Auburn Festival; Culture Center; Patti Hut; Have a Heart Benefit; Harlem Renaissance (Amherst College); Black History Celebration Event (Southern Polytechnic State University); Images of Sound (Augustus Savage Art Gallery at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst). Although writing and speaking/performing are my primary artistic endeavors, I also enjoy singing, doll-making, drawing, comedy, cooking, and dancing. Finally, I am the third-place recipient of the 1990 National Council for Black Studies Creative Writing Competition award. [May 2004]
For The First Time... Gwendolen McCloud
For the first time...
I tasted rapture
And it came in the form
Of your kiss under a butterscotch sun
For the first time...
I danced with the wind
And it embraced me
In the form of a smile from a little child
For the first time...
I drank slowly from my coffee cup
And found a symphony in the car horns
That caused me to hum
For the first time...
I learned to appreciate life in its totality
To never take for granted stolen moments
And to understand…
That life is as fragile as a fallen leaf.
