It Is Hunger That Binds Him, Decapitates Marie Karr
IT IS HUNGER THAT BINDS HIM, DECAPITATES
it is Hunger that binds him, decapitates
his Head of Understanding, despairs
him to sorrows of no end.
it is this Blight that summons
his meagerly-clad defenses
it is this Blessing that Curses.
(nothing in the bitterness of the beggars
could illumine a poet’s bedimmed candle)
it is the hunger that hovers.
it is still hunger, nevertheless, that frees
A man like Diogenes, from the fetters
of this lovely soul-death.
Let it be that hunger itself is the Void
that speaks Plenitude, the Voice
that shatters the quietude of this world.
