Faded Paperdolls
Seleta V Johnson

Rummaging through a tin of old junk
That was stored in the attic for years,
I found an old Sears catalog
Flipping pages, I fought back the tears.
For tucked deep inside the middle
Were graying memories of younger days,
Cut-out catalog paperdolls
Many torn now and withered with age.
I sat down on the old trunk
Holding tight to my treasured find,
Reminising about the days gone by
And the magic of a youth so divine.
I thought of a little girl of four
Silken locks of golden hair,
Playing grown-up with dishes of mud pies
While at the window my mother would stare.
She would laugh with glee as I rode down the driveway
On my old stick horse daddy made,
Summer time heat, jumping rope made me thirsty
Mama knew and made cherry kool-aid.
The telephone ringing brought me back to the present
And I suddenly felt tears begin,
Time passes swiftly, and now I am older
I can never go back there again.
But I still have the memories locked deep in my mind
And the old photographs on my wall,
And I smile as I look down and see my hands clasping
My book of beautiful faded paperdolls.
