Stockcars Krystal G Smith
I remember the stockcars
where mum worked after dad left.
She made hotdogs and chips,
sneaking us some
out the back of the caravan.
I remember the cold concrete seats,
huddling under blankets
as the dirt sprayed in our faces,
cheeks pinched red with cold and laughter.
I remember the smell of batter and grease
as she carried us,
pretending to sleep,
into our beds afterwards.
I remember visiting dad
every second weekend.
We had to use our manners,
cause we were visitors.
I remember mum was always smiling,
but I remember hearing her cry.
