you came to me in my darkest hour
offering words of cheer and hope
something to cling to when all seemed lost
you were my light
all joy had left this mortal
nothing but despair could I see
then you came into my life
and I started to mend again
you were my light
it was good
most would say great
laughter always was in your voice
never a moment drear
you were my light
then things changed
you shifted far from me
my hope was sinking fast
nothing could take your place
you were my light
I still see you in everything that moves
you are always close
but oh so far away
my heart is pained by the loss
you were my light
some say it will get better
I think it will only get worse
for there was a time
in the not so distance past
you were my light
