The Old Dark House
Joe Newton
I, on the steps of the great old house,
Looked down the sward to the rippled pool,
And watched him walk on the other side
Swinging his cane.
He went away:and the dogs howled grief
Hung flat and calm at the water's edge
Filling my ears.
And still he walked on the misted grass
As the bushes,opening to his stride,
Closed in his wake.
I ran down wild from the old house,
Past the trees to the silent pool,
Catching the light
As I plunged to its waiting deep
And felt its flow cool my burning tears
Dragging me down.
I, on the steps of the great old house,
Hold my gaze on the hollow ground,
Seeking the pool
Which once stood there in the dazzle-sun
No water now;only whispering reeds
telling my tale.
