A Hope Without Hope
Duke Sekhon

I saw Tv.
Nothing unusual, but you see,
There appeared on the screen
A forlorn and haggard form
With a scarf black wrapt around the neck.
A woman old and agonized by a cataract in the eye,
Stared, mused, and remarked;
Doth he move around
A reptile coiling his neck twice around?
Being strong of sight
I laughed aloud, and then sighed
When a vision upon my short- sightedness frowned:
Perhaps, in its aspect hid truth fleeing the
Hound of lies;
Perhaps, in its blackness, misery, bleakest
Hues smiles: -----
Often have I witnessed multitudes in throngs
Writhing in misery’s clasp,
As the one a mock reptile wore
His frail form:
The chosen wise suffer, too, likewise
But tread along,
Shrouding their dark state
In veiled scorn:
A veil tempered with forbearance and hope fond’---
A hope without hope for a better day to dawn.

"nice work. i can see the influences of the romantic poets you admire. i to started my poetic life after taking a romantic poetry class. i like your style. " -- nick marshburn.
"Thanks for the comments, Nick. You are right about my writing reflecting the influences of the bygone era of “ Romantic Poetry”. Some may regard it needless affectations on my part, but I assure you it is nothing of that sort --- it's simply that I love such poetry and believe that one writes what one reads, naturally. Since you happen to be well versed with Romantic Poetry as understood in literature, you may have noticed that people similarly inclined as myself are in great minority. But, what really matters is what gives one pleasure, and I have chosen as such to read and write in a manner which pleases me most. I consider myself a mere poetaster, who belongs to the ranks of those whose pathetic efforts at writing Alexander Pope had mercilessly demolished in, “The Dunciad”." -- Duke.
