Captain Courageous David Daniels
Standing at roll call
He's the Captain of the Guard
Little did anyone know
That life would get so hard
He's Mr.Official
It appears that there is nothing wrong
But that appearance
Would not last for long
Twenty years working in jail
Now it's time to retire
Little did anyone know
That the drink would become his only desire
Drinking to find the answer
Drinking while he's alone
Then the real problems would start
When he would return home
His wife would get angry
His teenage daughters would cry
But he wouldn't care
Because he needed the high
Perhaps it's his way of coping
Maybe he can't deal with stress
But the more he drank from the bottle
The more his life became a mess
Was it all those years working in jail
Or is it just the pain of life
Is it worth hurting your family
Is it worth losing your wife
Outside,no one had a clue
But inside you were losing the fight
Each day you took a drink
Even though you knew it wasn't right
You've worked hard for everything you have
And it seems like you have it all
But unfortunately you became addicted
And you were heading for a fall
But because of the love of your family
You now see what you must do
You must travel on the road to recovery
And your family will help carry you
Carry you to a place
Where you can fully recover
And learning to live without the drink
Is something you'll soon discover
You must learn to face your fears
And throw the bottle away
And make your home
A happy place where your family can stay
Your family knows that you're a survivor
We all know you can make it
You have to realize that when you drink
Your family hurts and they can't take it
But now you're in rehab
And we are all proud of you
Beating the addiction is something
We all know you can do
The family believes in you
We know you can beat it
We are all behind you
And we know you can defeat it
Defeat your addiction
Make yourself well again
And realize you don't have to be the enemy
Look around you and you'll find a friend
Because in the end
You'll always have your families love and affection
You'll be closer to the ones you love
And you'll have a deeper connection
And when you're out of rehab
There'll be times when you think of the high
But you'll always have the love of your family
To make sure you get by
Always know that the family is proud
Because we know you'll come out on top
You're a strong person
Someone who can't be stopped
We all know you can overcome your addiction
The bottle is something you can throw away
And the sun will shine again
And there will be brighter days
Many years you stood as a Captain
Enforcing the laws of jail
Now that you are on the road to recovery
We know you won't fail
But when you're tempted
For the drink you once loved
Ask God for strength
For he wiil be looking down on you from above
Seek out the love of your family
Because we'll always be there
We'll always love you
And know that we'll always care
For you are Captain Courageous
And you will win the fight
You will break through your darkness
And you will see the light
No longer will you need the bottle
Captain Courageous will survive
And you will stand on the highest mountain
In victory and happy to be alive
Captain Courageous has superhuman strength
He is powerful and strong
He will conquer his addiction
And he will do no wrong
He will become a better man
And he will look back on his sorrowful ways
And realize that the future
Will contain nothing but happier days
He has a heart of gold
And his will is made of stone
Always realize Captain that we love you
And you will never stand alone
But always remember Captain
There is only so much a courageous man can do
Always remember the love of your family
And that we'll always be there for you

"a sad poem and a fine tribute to your brother. Nice to know he has a family who cares. A family who cares does matter in times of despair. I never had one but I have learned how to survive and I count on God, He is my everything and when families and people fail, He never does. I enjoyed this reading very much. Thank you for your lovely comments on my poems, David. Hugs, " -- Dri.
"I agree with Dri's review. But having lived, and barely survived an alcoholic spouse who allowed his drink to destroy his family beyond repair, but still refused to see. It is good that Captain Courageous has sought help, hopefully it is in time. And that he will be strong, with support of loved ones. I think this a postive supportive tribute. " -- mattie.
"To say this poem hit the nail on the head is an understatement. You captured him 100%. With the help of all of us he will make it. You did an excellent job David. You should be proud." -- Janis, Ginesville, GA.
"DAVID YOU ARE A VERY TALENTED MAN....YOU MADE THE TEARS COME OUT THAT I HAVE BEEN HOLDING BACK FOR MY BROTHER AND HIS FIGHT. I AM SURE OTHERS WILL USE YOUR WORDS FOR INSPIRATION AS WELL." -- JIM.
