The Long Sleep That Steals Away Guilt Uche Peter Umez
above, the moon mopes owl-like;
inside, music spreads an itch over my nerves;
in bed, her hand is cold on my groin;
i think of getting drunk
sleep away the worries yeasting within
but night comes upon me
a hangman
its weight of dead silences
tightening my heart
with the abject noose
of betrayal -
nights riffles the vast leaves
of memory -
the air vibrates with dark raspings,
faces rise and tremble
like ghosts;
i've seen those faces before, before!
i see them right now!
i once knew you, oh hell!
yet again, i remember
friends left in a sinking bog
trust broken to bits;
night assures me
of a long, long, painless sleep
that steals away guilt,
holds out a goblet of hemlock
like an epiphany:
drink, drink....
you'll not see
the blood on your hands anymore;
i turn gleeful, content at last,
as the liquid caresses
my throat,my stomach.
