The Epic Of Adam Joe Shmo
Adam liked the girl who sat adjacent to him in Biology class.
He wasn’t sure why.
Only once had he seen her face, during that fire drill.
The rest of the time she just looked at the windowsill
And stared off into space.
He wondered how to get her attention. After much deliberation he decided to just ask her name and if she would be so inclined to go out with him on a date.
Nicole said yes to Adam’s request, partly out of pity and partly because he promised to take her to one of the finest restaurants in the city.
That restaurant could only be Denny’s.
Adam picked up Nicole at 8:00 sharp on Saturday.
He didn’t say much to Nicole, he was so wrapped up in his own thoughts that he didn’t hear her tell him that he missed a right hand turn.
Or that the restaurant they were pulling into
Didn’t look like Café Matou
They walked in and were shown to their table.
Adam felt like he was going to throw up and it didn’t help that Nicole was staring at him.
“Are you nervous Adam?” she asked.
“Me? Oh no I just can’t wait for the food to get here. Denny’s food is the best.”
“Well it wasn’t my first choice but I’m just glad that I get to converse with a human being tonight,” Nicole said.
“Yeah, I know what you mean. I talk to my fish in their tank all the time. They never answer me.”
“Really? That’s interesting. How many fish do you have in the tank?”
“None. Weird huh?”
“Yeah Adam, that’s—really—weird.”
Adam suddenly realized what he had just said. He couldn’t believe it.
It was if his brain had ceased to function.
“I’m sorry, you must think I’m nuts. I was just joking.”
She was still staring at him. Adam knew the prospect of another date was dim.
“I’m just a little rusty when it comes to this dating thing
.
But you can believe me when I say my love for you radiates from the center of my heart through my whole body.
When I’m around you I am like the Tin Man with a heart defect.”
“The Tin Man didn’t have a heart, that’s why he went to see the Wizard.
Haven’t you ever seen that movie?”
“That is of no matter Nicole.
The point is that, with a force like acid rain
You have corroded my heart
And driven me nearly insane.
Can I buy you a Go Kart, my Dorothy?”
“What are you talking about Adam? I’m Nicole remember?”
Oh yeah. Hey Nicole want to hear a joke?”
“I guess, as long as you don’t go off on another tangent.
“What did the mathematician buy his girlfriend for desert?”
“I don’t know...peach cobbler?”
“Pi. Get it?”
“Adam I’m just going to leave okay? Why did you bring me here? Probably because you can’t cook French food.”
“Nicole that is a terrible assumption
I can make great brownies on my Easy Bake Oven.
They’re baked under a light that gets really hot
Up to two hundred degrees.”
“Come back! Well at least the mathematician’s girlfriend
Had the decency to pick up the check
And not treat him like some insignificant dirt speck!”
“We could’ve gone back to my place.
And eaten bowls of Cheerios for an unspecified period of time.
I could’ve shown you a new game for my Playstation.
I have the highest score in the nation.
Or we could’ve eaten Cheerios and played Playstation at the same time.
It makes no difference to me.
