Up To Speed
Peter Halpin
When I open my eyes I see forwards.
From where I stand I see a way to go.
From what I've heard, what I've been told
my sights are all out of focus,
my aims in life are short-sighted.
I'm a bridesmaid walking down a cobbled path
picking up the trails of the best in front
and stumbling awkwardly even then.
I've got to keep up, I've got to keep myself
up to speed and up to scratch;
as it stands now I'm scraping through.
The smoke of the starting pistol has long disappeared.
The leading pack is coming round the final bend
and I'm still standing in the side lines.
As the winner's chest touches the tape, it hits me.
That could have been me, if only I'd taken part.
There's a bullseye out there on a target.
If I turn around I might be able to aim.
There's a prize on offer and it's going somewhere today.
If I play my cards right it will be mine tonight
but I've got to play something to get something to keep.
I've got to keep up, I've got to keep myself
up to speed and up to scratch
and I'm itching all over to get there.
First I'll have to keep my promises,
the promises I make to myself;
the ones that are broken behind me.
