Memories of a house
by the sea
lonely-waiting
clouds lay suspended
sunless across the sky
cold as if pleading 
for another chance
to start again
knowing it can never be
he searches the beach
miles of it
many times before they walked
hand in hand 
now sadness makes his feet 
heavy approaching  
their little house by the sea 
making him not want to leave
knowing he must
slowly pacing himself 
head hung low, thinking
it’s what’s kept him going
the memories,white sheets
draped over furniture
soon covered in dust
settling to the floor
the windows now closed  
never again to let
the salt air rush in 
on further reflection knowing   
he will never be back  
nearing closer still  
he catches his breath
one last time
at the sight of the house 
standing in front of him
in the years now passed 
he believes in his heart  
so he says to the air
with this chapter
of our lives now over
my darling it was a pleasure
to have shared it with you 
I am alone now 
just for a time
know that I think of you often
reflecting on the rest of my life
to live alone without you
having made my life complete
I will be forever grateful
for the love that we shared  
he sighs, once more
letting the door close silently  
behind him one last time
