Mason Cole is an Oklahoma author, 17 years of age. He attends the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics in Oklahoma City. Mason's favorite authors are Ayn Rand, William Shakespeare, Homer, and Orson Scott Card. His dream is to recieve a Ph.D. in History and then teach, writing novels and short stories on the side.

The Stars
Mason Cole
The stars--our silent judge and jury.
We look out at them for admittance into their world
And they smile and say "Not yet.
But one day you will cruise among us like the eagle
And we will welcome you."
Why are we not accepted?
Are we not worthy?
Perhaps it is because of our nature.
We fight and kill and hurt and die
And save and help and dream and hope--
A people of many contradictions.
Before we can look out to the stars
We must look into ourselves and fix the wound.
If we could feel each other's pain
And dream each other's dreams
Then we would be unified
And able to harness more of our potential
Than any that have ever existed.
If we could stop the violence
Then we could rise to new heights
And be carried exulting on the breath of the wind.
It will take many years and many lives and many wars
For mankind to realize that the most precious gifts
Are life and freedom.
But when we realize that we should help each other
Because that is what friends do
That we should help ourselves
Because no one else will
Then we can take to the skies and explore new worlds.
We will be free to encounter things strange and wondrous
And expand ourselves throughout the universe
Until only time's end could destroy us.
And to the end of humanity and the universe
The silent sentinels will be keeping their vigil.
The stars--guardians of creation.
