'twas The Night Before X-Mas 2k Mason Cole
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and no one does care;
The season’s true meaning has been lost somewhere,
And no matter how hard you look, you just won’t find it
In that box, or that box, or hiding behind it.
The creatures are stirring around shopping malls,
Dashing for presents through all of the halls;
While children won’t sleep, from their beds will run quick
Hoping to catch just a glimpse of Saint Nick.
Then the big day arrives, filled with presents and yells;
The revelers sing of a bobsled and bells;
And then “Ma”s in their kerchiefs and “Pa”s in their caps
Will crash after Christmas with ten-hour naps,
Neglecting what small bit of lore does remain
And leaving the churches to tell it again.
That long ago night of which memories are dim,
A blessing arrived in the town Bethlehem,
And a bright shining star led the world to an inn
Where there lay a small boy who’d forgive every sin.
His story, however, gets stashed with the “Maybe”s
In favor of Furbies and more Beanie Babies.
On, racecars! On, Sega! On, Barbie and Ken!
And all other toys that give children a grin.
While people on backburners put Christ the Lord,
You’ll be under trees if their folks can afford.
As Santa gets boosts from commercialization,
The latest hip fad will be sweeping the nation.
Now Christmas is certainly lovely like this—
With Rudolph and eggnog and mistletoe’s bliss—
But it comes at the cost of forgetting (What gall!)
The event without which Christmas can’t be at all,
And the man whose name rests for the span of all time
On a sweet holiday filled with spirit and rhyme.
Keep gifts in perspective, and all will be right—
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
[This poem, respectfully dedicated to Nicole Henry, came out of an idea I once had during a conversation with her. We were lamenting over how nobody ever talks about the real meaning of Christmas because of all the other traditions that have edged in through the years. I hope my work has aptly submitted my personal viewpoint that—to quote the traditional Christian saying—Jesus is the reason for the season.]
