Caged Fences
Jina Kaye
I feel like a lion trapped in a cage.
Roaring, wanting to rip something apart.
I am confined to an existence of always giving,
never receiving,
the fruits of my labor.
Time stands still for no one,
Although we can remember moments,
life can flash in front of our eyes.
But we are ultimately caged in the present.
I see fences all around me,
like I am in some damn August Wilson play.
But these fences don’t keep me from unwanted neighbors,
I have become that neighbor—
although sweet and giving,
I am cast aside
and caged on an island of no return.
I want to escape,
Runaway to my freedom,
Like the Underground Slaves.
I want to feel blessed,
Not stressed,
And always succeed—
even when I fail.
I want to give love,
And get it back in return
Because love is the path to freedom
The journey is life
And once you have achieved freedom,
You have gained love
And the journey continues.
But for now, I am caged;
Like a lion in a zoo
Like the bird
Like a person stuck with nowhere to go
But run around in a cage.
