The Other Day Jina Kaye
I was taking a stroll
the other day,
And I could not believe my eyes;
In this particular neighborhood,
Not a single smile in my direction:
Not one hello, hi, how are you today.
Just a bunch of spitting men
And women with too much at-ti-tude!
I was taking a stroll,
the other day,
And I could not believe my ears;
In this particular neighborhood,
All I could make out for the sake of my protection
Was the sound of bullets whirring by,
Babies crying,
Young men cursing
And young women squawking like chickens.
I was taking a stroll,
the other day,
And what did I smell?
Stale weed
Stale piss
Stale sex
Stale money
What was up with that new pizza joint?
The papaya place was doing just fine.
I was taking a stroll,
the other day,
In this particular neighborhood
And what did I feel?
Resentment, pain, anger, disappointment, greed and despair
But, I also felt pride, joy, happiness, fun and laughter…
Signs of the days to come.
I was taking a stroll,
the other day,
In this particular neighborhood called
Harlem
And I sensed hope on the horizon and changes were coming.
