I’m led to him through an open door, the light I see
I see him lying there; he starts to wag his tail on seeing me
The last I knew he was knocked down but able
My best friend hurt on a vet’s cold table
I’m told that he can’t come home or leave this place
The last time I can ever touch his fur and remember that face
“He is going to sleep”, never to return
I’m too young to understand but the message does deeply burn
My friend, my best friend is going and we only have this moment to part
I begin to cry as the injustice is unclear in my heart
But I bend to him as he lays on the cold table so sincere
Wagging his tail as he licks my hand to be near
He cannot move and groans with a slight ache
Our bond stronger than ever now must break
Tears in eyes, I pat him slowly as I start crying
He jolts in pain but tries not to let me know he’s dying
He licks my hand once more to say goodbye
The chain we made snaps as I hold a constant gaze into his eyes
Telling him everything in one moving stare
That he can go, that he can leave me but I know he’ll always be near
He barely groans while his tail tenderly sways
The life in his eyes quickly sapping away
I’m led back through the open door, the darkness I see
I glance back to see Benji’s eyes close and forever I’ll grieve
