INTRO (Credits):

ES: Castle/manor/arena

NARRATOR:
HAGGARD OLD WOMAN:” AS the drums of war grow silent, people grow restless and violent. Drunk with the blood of fallen enemies, the Arena must be opened to satisfy their uncontrollable hunger for suffering and violence.”
< Zoom slowly to two massive black, stone doors>

NARRATOR:
Haggard Old Woman (Historian) :The Arena.... a place where the criminals and enemies of the state are thrown by the ruthless tyrant to face sick games of chance, placing a hellish death behind one door and a fair wife behind the other.
FS on servant in darkened hallway.
Close up on servant.
< He peeks around the corner. Clearly shocked to see the Princess, in her almost divine, rich purple silk dress, locked in a passionate embrace with a mere commoner. The servant drops his torch and runs to the king.>

Full Shot: Servant telling the King of the commoner (MAN)

NARRATOR:
“Haggard Old Woman: The princess seethed with a fiery hatred of the woman standing behind the stone door. Blushing with shy anticipation, she wished only that she could kill her. Utterly damage her so that no man would take her for a wife! And yet... beyond that unbearable hatred lay jealousy beyond her belief. If only she could be the unsuspecting prize behind the door. Waiting to be either horrified and traumatized by the screams of agony next to her, or filled with the joy of being married to this man, condemned to be an example of so called "enemies" of the "state" she unknowingly served so obediently. The dog! The wench! The unworthiness teared at her like the claws of the devil himself!”
________________________________________________________________

NARRATOR

“Haggard Old Woman: For through her connections and power being the kings daughter, she had obtained the knowledge of the fate the lie beyond each door, a portal to pleasure or hell. She was torn between wishing that he would die at the jaws of the beast instead of be married to that impossibly witless "maiden" as they so titled her! Yet, she also wished that he would live, if only to have but a shred of memory of the bliss they shared together. She could only wait to choose the door she would subtley signal to him. It was like waiting for the death of her soul, and of the rebirth of her father's pride.”

NARRATOR:
“Haggard Old Woman: The crowd this day did not however, shout with the the blood drunk anticipation of the average criminal. No, for this man was being punished for his love. And they were free to love weren't they? It made them all think of the "State" that they all held like a god to which they must helplessly bend to, like grass in the wind. For what were they working towards now? This man was clearly no threat to any "state" or "empire" or petty kingdom, he was but a lithe, young man who happened to be fancied by the princess. It was not his doing! They stayed silent, few talking, fewer of them however, could not control their base instincts and roared with anticipation at his death. The older citizens, who had helped build the stepping stones of this damned kingdom, wept for the state that it was in compared to that of the young, well-to-do settlement it had once been.”

The man turned to the princess, and yelled, part of his voice showing anger beyond that of an average man, and part pleading for his life.
• The COMMONER(LOVER) glances at the princess, expecting a glance to the left or right.

"What the hell is this? A feeble attempt at plagiarizing a classic work? A screenplay (as you so loosely describe this entry) based on such a well-known work is hardly ethical, even if legal statutes on copyrights have expired. What are you trying to accomplish? " -- Richard.
