Down For The Count. Down For The Count. I sipped my gin and tonic, and watched her out of the corner of my eye. She was squirming in her seat. I cracked a grin, as I always did. Another sip. I looked back up at the screen. I wasn’t even that interested and I tried to keep an eye on the Knicks game. She elbowed me in the ribs as she became more and more animated. 3rd race from Saratoga, 3 year olds, 8 in the field. Waitress comes by. Nice looking girl, long legs and tanned.
“Another drink sir?”.
“Yeah, gin and tonic, and better make it another scotch on the rocks for the lady”.
And down the stretch they come.
“Who did you bet on again”, as I can’t hold the grin any longer and let off a full smile.
“You’re such an asshole Vincent”.
So it wasn’t her day. Down For The Count slowed, finished 6th. $10,000 down the toilet, but who gives a fuck. It wasn’t her money to begin with. It never was. And it sure as hell wasn’t mine. So why would I give a fuck.
“Better luck next time baby, you can never tell in this shit”.
“Fuck you Vincent”.
The worst thing that could happen to this girl was a call to Daddy a little prematurely. But I’m sure she’s ok. Fuck it, I will even throw in dinner tonight. Well, only if I have to.
“Gimme the racing form”.
“Not done yet?” I reply, but its just a reflex. I’m not even listening to her.
Allan Houston jumper. Knicks up 4. 2:43 left. Need to beat a 6 point spread.
“Here you go sir”, the waitress mutters.
“Pick a number…between 1 and….let’s see…” as I grab the form back from Marla. “What fucking race is it…..ok between 1 and 7”.
“Umm….I don’t know” replies the waitress.
“Any number….just a number….no fucking calculus or anything here hon”.
“4”.
“Ok that’s where my money is going on the next race”.
I look down at the form. 4th Race, Saratoga, Horse Number 4 “TAKE THE FALL”. I glance up at the monitor. Spree downs two free throws. Knicks up 12, 26 seconds left. I think we have a winner. I love this town.
