         MOBILE MISCONDUCT 699w

The mobile rang at exactly the wrong moment, as usual, but Muriel thought she had better answer it, especially as she could see from the display that it was her husband calling.

“What is it?” she said, trying to control her breathing.

“Just me dear.” She thought Doug’s voice sounded a touch strained. “I’m afraid I won’t be home early tonight. Something’s come up at the office.”

“Oh, really, that’s too bad.” She tried to hide her satisfaction. “But don’t worry - I’ll keep something hot for you.”

“He’s going to be late,” she said, a smile breaking out on her face.

“Great!” came the reply. “Now switch that thing off and come back to bed.”

Douglas gazed with satisfaction round his spacious new office. It was twice the size of his old one. He particularly liked the deep leather sofa along one wall. So useful for putting clients at their ease. And other things. Promotion may have brought more work, but the perks made up for it. Though if Muriel ever found out what he was doing with the extra money - he shuddered. Still, she wasn’t going to find out. Not till he was ready, anyway.
His secretary, Donna, came in carrying a tray with a champagne bottle and two glasses.
He watched her, admiring her slender yet curvaceous figure, her glossy shoulder-length and clear youthful skin. Muriel was well preserved for her age (and so she should be, the amount of time and money she spent at that wretched gym), but Donna was the real thing. And it was such a change to be with someone who welcomed his advances, rather than endured them. Her short leather mini tightened over her rump as she bent to set the tray on a low table, then she straightened up with a squeal as he grabbed her from behind.

“Hey! Was that your mobile, or are you really pleased to see me?”

He laughed, and taking the phone from his pocked tossed it onto the sofa before pulling her down beside him. “D’you want to see how pleased I am?”

Donna giggled. “Let’s have a drink first. Did you phone your wife? You’re sure she doesn’t suspect anything?”

“Course not. She thinks she knows everything there is to know about me.”

Donna pouted. “I wish we didn’t have to hide like this.”

“It won’t be much longer, precious. Just till I’ve enough stashed away in our secret account where she can’t touch it - then we’ll be off! So what does fluffy bunnikins say to that?”

“Grrrr - c’me on, tiger!”

Muriel watched Greg saunter down the garden path, then closed the door and went back upstairs. She had better remake the bed. Doug would probably not be back for a while yet, but you never knew. He shouldn’t be working so hard, at his age. He might have a heart attack or something. Of course, he was well insured. May wives would be suspicious of all these late nights, but she knew her Doug. He hadn’t the imagination to embark on an affair. That was his trouble, really. No imagination, no ambition, no verve. He should have had promotion by now, and not have to spend all these hours on the job.

Now Greg had imagination, and a lot else besides. He may be a lowly gym instructor now, but he was definitely a coming man. Since he had become her personal trainer she had never been in better shape, but it was the private sessions at home that were most beneficial. He was such an athlete. Not like poor old Doug, shagged out after ten minutes.

She picked up her mobile from the bedside table, and switched it on again. A message showed on the display.
It was a strange message. She could hear confused background noises, footsteps, a girl giggling. ‘Someone’s pressed the wrong button by mistake,’ she thought.
She was about to end the call when she thought she heard a voice she recognised. Doug’s voice.

“D’you want to see how pleased I am?”

Muriel stood, white-faced, rigid with shock. Eventually the phone slipped from her nerveless fingers to lie, muttering, on the bed.

"hehehe... precious. It sounds great to me, languagewise. But that it's in the "Humor" category makes me wonder about the ending. It seems to end sadly, not humorously." -- Caitlin Conaway, USA, California.
"I really enjoyed that. I didn't find it comical in the slightest, but it was very good. The dialogue was perfect." -- Jack Brown.
