A Sandy Surprise
“Good-bye Mom and Dad” Jamie said as she hurried out of the front door on her way to school. For today was her last day of high school and she was already running late. But nothing could have prepared her for the summer she was about to encounter. Jamie was a bright girl, had class, and personality. Everything was going for her; her life was right on track where it needed to be. She was captain of the cheerleading squad, straight A student, beauty queen; a true social butterfly. She cared too much about people and could make anyone feel wanted or important. Jamie admired her parents and had a special bond with them like no one else. Being the only child gave her advantages of getting to know her parents one on one. Allan was the love of her life. They met at school freshman year and dated right away. They have been dating ever since and nothing can split them apart.
Jamie and Allan couldn’t wait for the annual trip to the beach with her parents after graduation. It was always a fun and exciting trip they would take together each summer. But of course Jamie and Allan couldn’t stay in the same room. Girls in one, boys in the other. That was the only downfall about the trip but otherwise everything was amazing. Graduation was a blast and the after party completed it all. They had three months of freedom before it was time to grow up and find them selves in the world. Jamie and Allan were going to spend the summer together since they would go to different colleges in the fall.
Two weeks later Jamie was in her room packing her clothes for the big trip. She made sure she had everything: shorts, tanks, flip-flops, and of course a summer supply of swimsuits. After packing Jamie headed downstairs and waited for Allan. When Allan arrived he dropped something out of his bag and Allan picked it up in a hurry. Allan told Jamie it was for later and it was something special for her. Jamie was curious after all it was in little black box. After a long drive to the beach they finally arrived and quickly unpacked their clothes and headed down to the beach. Many hours of swimming made Allan and the family hungry so they got a bite at the local diner. Jamie told Allan she didn’t feel well and to let her be alone for a while so she could rest. But Jamie wasn’t sick; she wanted to find that black box. Allan went up the harbor with her parents instead.
When the coast was clear she went in Allan room and searched the entire place. No ring box. Where could it be Jamie thought. She took one last look and found it under Allan’s drawers. She closed her eyes tight before she opened the box and when she did her eyes got large and a tear ran down her face. It was a diamond ring from Tiffanys. The one she had always wanted. The platinum, princess cut diamond ring she had always dreamt about. Jamie put the ring on and it was a little loose but she didn’t care. She decided to go down to the beach and watch the sunset and admire her ring before Allan came back. The sunset was beautiful just like in pictures. She thought about her life and what she had planned.
Jamie was feeling tired so she went back to the room to put the ring back but when she looked down at her hand it wasn’t there. Jamie’s heart began to race and her blood began to boil. She ran straight passed Allan and her parents on her way back to the beach. When Allan arrived he found Jamie staring into the night sky with tears running down her face. She got up and told Allan she was sorry and didn’t mean to look but she just couldn’t stand the suspense any longer. Allan was a bit upset but he got over it and gave Jamie a hug and told her it can be replaced. He wiped away her tears and they walked on the beach together hand in hand.
Six years later Jamie and Allan came back to the same beach after college graduation. Jamie was building a sand castle and hit something in the sand with her finger. She searched for the object and found it two inches below. When she pulled the object out she gasped. For it was the ring Allan was going to give her six years ago. She was shocked something so little could survive in one place. Jamie thought it was a sign they were meant to be together. She put the ring on her finger and smiled.
