Memoirs From The Row
David B Doc Byron

   The words ''kill,'' and ''killer,''sometimes
take on a new meaning for me.
While in prison, I played around with both words,
toyed with them, tryed to take them apart and
examine them.
See what made them tick, made them work.
But they're still just words.
Like the term, ''casualties of war,'' the term
used to describe dead soldiers zipped up inside
cold gray bodybags during the Vietnam war.
To me, theres nothing ''casual'' about killing.

Grant you, there are those of us who are cold
hearted enough to kill without remorse, have no
regard for human life. They seem to kill casually,
as casually as they would open the back door and
toss a trash bag in to a plastic barrel.
But, theres still nothing ''casual'' about killing,
taking another human life for no good reason, IF
 there is any good reason.
While in prison, I met quite a few ''casual'' killers,
one of which was Billy Ray Collins, a six foot
three, two hundred and fifty pound serial killer.
He had a massive chest, arms like ten pound hams,
fingers like bananas. Eyes like a doll's eyes;
lifeless and coal black. His eyes looked like two
black coat button eyes on a snowman.
And when he smiled, which was surprisingly often,
his perfect white teeth shined like polished white
pearls.

    Had a good personality, too.
Not the kind of guy you'd figure for a mass murderer
who had killed at least 75 people with his bare hands
and pearly white teeth.
It was safe to say that he had an ''unhealthy''
appetite.
Anyways, back to the subject at hand; killing.
I had killed, as Billy ray had killed, {although
not as many folks as Billy}, but I had still killed.
Facing it.
Living with it.
Letting the cold hard facts consume you, consume
your whole being, like the dreaded TB consumes your
lungs, robbing you of your right to breathe.
But when youre doing time for killing another human
being, you wave your rights, watch them blow away
with the wind like a leaf caught up inside of a
tornado.

    Killing.
Taking someone else's right to live, and at the same
time taking away your own rights to freedom.
Thats one thing Billy Ray taught me; Theres alot
of different ways to kill, even without the
physical act of taking a life.
You can kill yourself and still be living, a member
of the walking dead, a zombified, crucified, used up
shell of your former self, destined to walk the
earth for all eternity carrying along the excess
baggage left over from your acts of crime.
Ive always carried most of my excess baggage inside
my head; memories, good ro bad, can tend to fill
up the large suitcase of your mind until it bursts
apart at the seams.
And, nothing makes it go away.

Theres no activities, mental or physical, no
drug, no high grade booze that can erase it from
your mind completely. Its there when you wake up
in a cold sweat and screaming, its there when you
lay down at night to hopefully go to sleep.
The guilt.
The guilt is also your constant companion; your
confidant, your best friend. Your friend helps
you lose sleep, makes you nauseous, makes you wish
you were dead instead of the person you killed.
Oh yeah....guilt and me have spent alot of time
together, gotten to know each other quite well.

Billy Ray also taught me a new way to kill.
Or, tried to, anyway.
Not in the literal sense, not with my hands, a gun,
a knife, or a ball bat. Zipguns? Nah. Childsplay.
With my mind.
He told me one day that if I concentrated enough,
wanted something bad enough, wished for it with all
my heart and soul, it would happen.
He said that everybody had the power to do it, but
they just didnt realize it until it was too late
sometimes.
DUhhhhh? No shit, Billy boy.
I tired it one day when I was out in the yard,
watching the other inmates on my block play
prison football. I was sitting there watching
these assholes kill each other and most likely
making the guards happy, when I looked down to see
a rat crawling around by my feet.

I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, then
silently wished the rat dead.
Well, needless to say, the rat didnt die.
But, it did bite me, like the slimy little fuck
knew what I was thinking, bit me for wishing him
dead.
I spent over a week in the prison Infirmary, being
subjected to rabies shots in my guts with a big
syringe that looked like a crocheting needle my
grandma used to make mittens with.
Needless to say,I didnt try Billy's mind over matter
method of killing anymore, whether it be a rat
or a memory.

About five years into my fifteen years to life
sentence, the Warden, A Mr. Alex Sims, moved Billy
Ray from my cellblock and over to a block across
the yard.
The warden hadnt given any explanation; just moved him.
I missed Billy after that; He was only about fifty
yards away, but in stir, fifty yards can seem like
fifty miles.
I never saw Billy alive again, either.
About two weeks after they moved him, I was standing
in the chowline one morning when a guard by the
name of Jimmy Owens, a real likeable fella,
walked over to me and whispered to me that Billy
had been shanked in the throat by some big bull
queer who's advances Billy had turned down via a
punch in the mouth, knocking out most of the bull's
front teeth.
Billy's death reminded me of something I already
knew but I had almost forgotten during my five
years of long, boring days and seemingly endless
nights;
Even if you dont let them screw you, youre still
screwed.
Case closed.

     Kill, kill, kill.
Death, death, death. Its a neverending story, a
neverending cycle, just like making babies or
paying bills. Or, paying off a debt owed for the
purposes of redeeming yourself and for trying to
make up for someone else's grief.
Either way, its impossible.
No matter what, its always there.

I was told during my fifth year of doing time
in my six by eight foot country club condo that
my sentence had been overuled; I was being moved to a
cell on death row.
And, like when they moved Billy, there was no explanation
given.
You didnt ask too many questions in stir; you just
went along with the program, even if it did mean
strapping you down to a steel gurney and pumping
your viens full of toxic waste.

Two years, three months, and three weeks later,
I was given advance notice that I was to be killed
by ''lethal injection,'' not ''killed,'' the next
day at precisely 12 noon, EST.
The process they used to kill you is alot like the
one vetrinarians use to kill dogs and cats. Its called
''euthanization,'' I believe.
Some epitaph; Jimmy Wilson Jr. killed just like
good old Fido.
Jesus.

Well...its getting close now, noon is.
Ten minutes to noon and counting.
Soon,Ill be dead, as stiff as a dimestore mannequin,
as cold as ice, and as smelly as a dead trout.
Death....I keep thinking about it.
Kill, kill, kill.
The cycle never ends, you know?
I hope someday that people will stop killing
other people, learn ot live and let live.
But I dont see that day coming anytime soon.

People will just keep on killing, whether it's
killing their victims with mental or verbal abuse,
or just downright killing them period.
The physical act, like a did.
Ive seen worse ways of dying, too.

Well, Im going to be dead soon.
You see?!!
The killing never ends.
