Five-thirty his mom would leave for her weekly dinner with the church group, his dad wouldnt be home from work until after seven. Micheal couldn't wait.
Anita, his sister, had promised him the full make-over as soon as they were alone. He lay on his bed listening to the stereo, shivering with excitement every few minutes. The posters adorning the walls smiled down on him, everyone happy and the world suddenly less tedious.
Time rolled by in fragments, the clock barely altered each time he looked up at its stern face. Then, just when he wasnt expecting it, the time came.
His sister opened his door and stood, beaming, in the doorway.
"She's gone, come on."
Micheal jumped up and composed himself before following after her.
When he got to Anitas room she had everything laid out on her dresser and a chair in the centre of the floor.
"Sit down" she sighed, as if she hadnt been as into this idea as he was.
He crossed the floor and placed himself on the chair, shaking a little in anticipation. Biting his lip he looked over all the tools she'd laid out; strange contraptions he'd have no idea how to use.
She asked him what kind of look he wanted, he told her he didnt care, just make him look like a girl.
First she put his hair back in a ponytail. He'd washed and brushed it as she'd instructed earlier in the day. The feeling of a rubber band holding all his hair in one place was new to him. It felt as if he was exposed all of a sudden, his face on show with nothing standing between him and the world; no protective shield.
Anita toyed with some little tubs of powder, all of them foreign to Micheal as he sat bemused, his eyes wide and his heart racing. She turned to him with a large, soft brush and began to apply something to his cheeks. The bristles were softer than any brush he'd ever felt, they tickled slightly and felt nice. Sexy even.
When she stepped back and turned to her table of implements he watched as a trail of pink dust followed her for a moment and made its way to the wooden floor. Over on the bed he noticed a black dress laid out and a pile of necklaces or bracelets and earings and god knows what else.
She returned to him with a much smaller brush and made him close his eyes. As she applied colour to his eyelids she asked him if he wanted to go somewhere when they were done. He told her no, not just yet and she shook her head disapprovingly.
Leaving the room for a moment, Anita returned with a small black bottle in her hand.
"Mom always has my mascara" she said, shaking the bottle and studying Micheals face.
He swore she was going to poke him in the eye as she brushed his lashes back carefully. Then came the bit he'd been looking forward to most, the lipstick.
Asking him to part his lips slightly, she took his jaw in her left hand and painted his mouth a deep red with her right. He clamped his lips down on a tissue as he'd seen her do so many times before and held it out to look at the pattern he'd made.
"Put this on" she said, holding up the black dress, "I wont look." She turned and faced the wall.
Feeling slightly awkward and nervous with curiousity, Micheal began taking his clothes off.
"Dont get any make-up on the dress!" Anita shouted, turning her head slightly, causing him to jump back with the dress against him.
He carefully placed his head into it and then straightened the dress out, reaching behind himself to try and zip it up.
"It's no good" she said, looking him up and down. "I can see your boxers through it, take them off."
This sounded a little odd coming from his sister but looking down at himself she was right, the edges of his underwear showed right through the dress. He slid them down his legs, trying not to pull the dress right up, and tossed them into the corner.
They both agreed it looked much better and Anita started decorating him with rings, bracelets, a necklace and a pair of clip on earings. The feeling of so much jewelerry was new and curious but then, he thought, that's what this is all about.
"Hair clips are in the bathroom" Anita said over her shoulder as she left the room.
Micheal walked around the room, getting used to the jangle of bracelets hanging at his sides and the feeling of a womans clothes against his skin. The soft material of the dress caressed him with every step and as he smoothed the wrinkles out his hand met a soft bulge at the crotch. His eyes widened as he realised exactly how much he was enjoying the feel of the dress against his skin, especially as it was the only thing covering him.
For a moment all he could do was grab at it, without even considering where he was or what he was doing, he was alone and the natural reaction was to stimulate it further. Forcing himself to stop was tough but Anita was only in the other room and returning any minute so he sat back down on the seat and tried to adjust the wrinkles in the crotch of the dress to hide anything noticable.
He couldnt do it, no matter how he sat and how he placed the material, the dress was just too tight to position in any other way. Anita walked in and he crossed his hands on his lap.
"I couldnt find the best ones, these'll have to do" she said, taking the band off his hair and moving to stand in front of him.
Placing the clips in her mouth she ran a brush through his hair a few times as he sat and stared at her feet, rigid and uncomfortable. Suddenly he didnt want to be here.
"Nearly done." As she spoke a hairclip fell from her lip and into his lap. His eyes widened.
Before he could think of a way to pass it back to her without revealing what she probably wouldnt even suspect he was hiding, she had her hand in his lap, fumbling about for the dark brown clip. He closed his eyes and prayed she'd find it before she found anything else.
"Perfect" she said as she placed the clip in his hair and stood back with her head tilted. They smiled at each other and she went to fetch him a mirror. Until now he'd relied on her expressions to tell him how good or bad he looked.
Gentley patting his head to feel where his hair was held back and trying not to lick his lips, Micheal slipped a pair of heels on and strolled around the room with confidence, imagining how it'd be if he ever dared leave the house like this. The hair wasnt protecting him anymore but a new mask shielded his face.
"Oi" Anita called out and as Micheal turned, smiling, the flash of the camera went off in his face.
He stood staring, confused, for a moment, wondering why she had the camera and not the mirror.
"You're gonna be my slave from now on" she said, matter-of-factly.
Micheal tried to argue but couldnt force his words out, so he stood, dumbstruck, until she walked out of the room and downstairs, calling out that their dad would be home soon so he'd better get changed and washed. She was blackmailing him and he had no idea what to do or say, so he sat down on her bed and looked down at the dress that now felt so stupid and unattractive.
Walking into the bathroom, he started unzipping awkwardly, his hands knotted up behind his head. The dress fell to the floor in a pile and Micheal looked up at the mirror. There was no girl, no woman, no amazing transvestite. Just a confused, naked boy with mascara sliding down from his shadowed eyes, carving a path through his powdered cheeks and dripping slowly onto his bare chest.

"i think this you did a *great* job at portraying just how confusing life can be for some people, especially when they aren't "like all the other kids." the only suggestion i would make would be in the beginning... i think it would hook an audience even better if you didn't mention that he was getting the makeover until he sits at her dresser.. it'll make us wonder what he's so nervous about instead of getting all the facts from the getgo. but that's just my opinion, great work :)" -- rae.
"This is very good. Your have taken on a controvercial subject and turned it into pure artistry. My deepest congratulations!" -- Johanna, Delavan, WI, United States.
